Fantasy detective novels

Hey umm I wasn't sure where best to put this let me know if this is the wrong place.

However I need some advice on some good Fantasy Crime books, I've finally finished the Dresden files and since i'm going home to the UK in 2 weeks i'll have a chance of picking up some new books and I'm just looking for advice on whats best. I'm not to keen on Sci-fi Crime books. I've read all the Vimes books in the Pratchett series and google isn't particually being very helpfull.

Thanks a ton in advance

Sammi

Hi, Kal, and Welcome to the Chrons!...

A place to start would be this thread: Detective SFF Recommendations

Why not pop over here, too: Introductions and tell us a bit about yourself?...

Re: Fantasy detective novels

These are probably mentioned in the reference above, but the only others that come to my mind (as I love the Dresden books but am not truely a mystery fan) are the Garrett PI books by Glen Cook.

Yep, I was going to suggest PI Garrett.

China Mieville's recent City and the City contains a noir thriller element and is by most counts an excellent read.

Once I get through my current mini-batch I'll be reading that myself before comparing it to Vandermeer's Mr. Finch, another SFF detective story I'm very much looking forward to read.

Good luck.

Re: Fantasy detective novels

Something recent is Sword-Edged Blonde by Alex Bledsoe.
Quote:
Above Angelina's Tavern in down-and-dirty Neceda you'll find the office of Eddie LaCrosse, a freelance sword jockey who, for twenty-five gold pieces a day, will take on any task short of murder for hire. Eddie's on his way back from a routine investigation when his horse almost runs down a half-naked blonde in serious trouble. Against his better judgment, he promises to protect the frightened young woman, only to find himself waylaid by unknown assailants and left for dead beside her mutilated body.
There's a followup already - Burn Me Deadly

Re: Fantasy detective novels

SHADOW OF A BROKEN MAN by George C. Chesbro nicely straddles the piano wire dividing sf and fantasy.

Re: Fantasy detective novels

Janny Wurts' To Ride Hell's Chasm is a mystery/detective novel for about half the book, and then it is an all-out action tale until the end. The main characters spend a lot of time investigating what has happened, as as it comes clear, the action really kicks in.

Mystery is an element that could be employed in many more fantasy novels.

Re: Fantasy detective novels

Hi Kalyissa

I'm not sure if I'd classify this as purely crime SF/F but Kim Harrison's Rachel Morgan series is really good.

Rachel Morgan (a witch), Ivy Tamwood (a living vampire) and Jenks (a pixy) start their own runner/detective agency. So far, seven books in the series have been published (I'm reading book 7 now) and they're well-written and entertaining books with strong female characters.

Another possibility is Justina Robson's Quantum Gravity series. I read the first two books and they're quite entertaining, though I prefer Kim Harrison's books.

A book series I adore is the Charlie Parker series by John Connolly. The supernatural/fantasy themes become more evident as the series progresses but every book makes for captivating reading. The Charlie Parker novels are good good GOOD.

I'll let you know if I think of anything else.

Re: Fantasy detective novels

I remembered another series! The Joe Pitt series by Charlie Huston - gritty, real fantasy/detective series. Very, very good.
