Having now read it, I would say it is a most worthy book for the shortlist. Troubadour is a scholarly book with a super story and wonderful writing. Regardless of the outcome of the Costa awards, this book is a huge achievement, Mary. Well done. I shall be sure to genuflect appropriately next time we meet.

Thank you, Mark! It didn't win the Costa - that was Patrick Ness's The Ask and the Answer. But I was very happy to be there.
