| Re: Why did the Chicken cross the road? "Why did the Chicken cross the road? Existentially speaking did the chicken actually "cross" the road? Would the road itself actually consider itself to have been crossed and then if it had what would it's reaction be? I mean are speaking anthropologically in that this is (or could be said to be) an avian feathered creature or are we speaking symbolically in that what ever creature, being, or personage this is, is somewhat fearful, possibly of what it may find on the far side of said road. No clear answers to any of these queries is forth coming in the initial question. Therefore to offer a reason for the action (if indeed an "action" and not just a confrontation) did take place is premature at this time. |

| ...Prepare Thyself | Re: Why did the Chicken cross the road? Ch-ick-en from the ancient Kelderick. There have been many theories regarding the origin of these primeval beasts not to mention speculation regarding it's ovate state. I would appear from fossilised records that the Chi-ck, a rudimentary ancestor to the Chi first appeared in the Tarmacadam period which falls just between the Jurassic and Triassic. This often forgotten period saw the development of several new forms of creature. It it is believed that the transition from water borne egg layers first developed in this period. In particular the formation of carbonate shell that encased the ova and rendered the requirement for water redundant. This is when the Chi-ck acquired the post fix en - short for enhancement. The phrase, which is actually a reference to this development, has nothing to do with roads, traffic or the desire to establish a position on the other side of a freeway. It refers to this transitional period in the geological time. Obviously the reason was that the chi-ck-en needed to develop and this is why one so often hears the other 'misconception' that the egg came before the chi-ck-en. Which if you followed the arguments above can now be seen for what it is. Over time the Chi-ck-en became bastardised and eventually became the word that is now traditionally referred to as a Chicken. |

| Re: Why did the Chicken cross the road? So it isn't some half-recalled questioning by a Bishop dealing with persistant rumours of animal sacrifices on the altar of a church centuries ago, encapsulated in the (now-misquoted) phrase: "Why died the chicken across the rood?" |

| Destroyer of Words | Re: Why did the Chicken cross the road? The chicken and the two trail-blazers were in the middle of a small, deserted town. "So much for your skill as a leader and a guide," the chicken said to the first. "We were looking for El Dorado. The sign outside this town says Hell Domingo!" "Whaddayamean, you t'ink we no good trail guides?" said the first man and he immediately took off his coat and began pummelling the chicken. But the chicken was well versed in the art of Kentucky Thai Boxing and beat the man to a gibbering pulp in no time. "You want some? You want to take me on?" the chicken said, glowering at the other scout. The other man ran away, knowing he could be no match for this bird and not wishing to engage in a set-to he had no chance of winning, screaming, "No, don' you set on me, don' you set on meeeee!" But the chicken followed. He wasn't done yet. So, why did the chicken cross the road? To set upon the other guide. That sounded so much better in my head ... |
