| Homeland Security Breached Numerous federal buildings in the US failed to detect agents who walked through security checks with bomb-making equipment. Apparently a combination of poorly trained personnel and a failure to follow proper procedures have left many federal buildings open to terrorist attack. One wonders just how great a danger of such an attack there is, considering that no one has taken advantage of a situation that must have existed for some time. | W. Blake | Re: Homeland Security Breached The sad truth is that practically nothing that any country does will prevent a determined person from carrying out their plans, given enough time and planning. I find much of Homeland Security a cheap fear-tactic as a whole, and a method of curtailing civil liberties in the name of national security. To paint with a deliberately broad brush, we Americans live in the constructed idea that before 9/11, we were "safe" and now we're "unsafe," when really neither of those two alternatives is close to the truth. (Watch this space -- will read the article and comment further after bar review.) |

Actually if a large scale terrorist attack is statistically likely to happen say once in a decade, then you were safest just after 9/11 and at most risk on 9/10. | |

| W. Blake | Re: Homeland Security Breached Sorry; the sarcasm may not have been clear. We have this idea that everything was hunky-dory before 9/11 and now we're doomed, when a) we weren't hunky-dory then and b) we're not doomed now; we're actually more on par with the threats that the rest of the world faces. |

| Re: Homeland Security Breached All of this is the same old stuff, to a point at least. The Chinese stealing rocket secrets, the Chinese and Russians breaking into the computer system for the electric grid, all sorts of cold war incidents that were covered over, and the North Korean internet attack against us last week all show that these problems are ongoing. 1. We had threats against us both terrorist and from other nations going back decades before 9-11. 2. Our ability to defend against threats has had little improvement overall and in some cases has been reduced. 3. Homeland security is basically a term for a way to take our freedoms without any resistance. 4. The loss of freedoms will be with us a long time as the liberals are all for it now that they control things. Apparently their objections were only about Republicans; wiretaps, watch-lists, etc. are peachy keen if controlled by the democrats. Personally, the theoretical ability of enemies to smuggle in bomb making materials isn't as concerning as open belligerence by a country we are at war with. The Korean war resulted in a cease-fire, not an end of the war. Didn't North Korea say that the agreement was off? Is not lobbing missiles in violation of treaties and launching internet attacks against military systems acts of war. We are at war with North Korea and are sitting around with our thumbs up our a----. Sounds like the situation with al Qaeda on 9-10. |
