I'm sure someone is going to come along and answer that.

Naturally, it won't be me.

I fear the same Teresa - although, note that I didn't use a question mark but an exclamation mark, surely implying that my 'question' was rhetorical, that is unanswerable.

Stay back, sci-fi fans!

Re: Science Fiction v Fantasy: Race to 100

I say SF instead of sci-fi (a term that still makes me shudder), but I prefer to think of myself as a purist, not a geek.

Fortunately, Fantasy has so far managed not to pick up such a loathsome abbreviation yet.

I suppose with its ever-growing popularity it will, though.

Didn't the great Heinlein himself coin the phrase 'sci-fi'?

Re: Science Fiction v Fantasy: Race to 100

Nope, that was Forrest J Ackerman who invented the term. He was an avid reader of SF and a prominent fan, but the term never caught on with other fans, and for years was used dismissively by other people who wanted to sound like they knew what they were talking about.

Even though younger fans use it in quite a different sense now, it still rankles with most old-timers, savoring of a certain youthful disrespect for the traditions of the genre.

Re: Science Fiction v Fantasy: Race to 100

Quote:
Forrest J. Ackerman is generally credited with coining the term sci-fi in 1954. Jeff Prucher submitted a cite from a 1949 letter printed in Robert Heinleins' "Grumbles from the Grave", a collection of letters, but this was subsequently shown to be an editorial mistranscription; the original is clearly sci-fic...
I stand corrected.

I will in the future attempt to eschew the use of the aforementioned abbreviation for the use of SF. I usually just don't think about it. I do grind my teeth at NBCs new SYFY for the SYFY Channel.

As for Fantasy you're probably right. I date back to when finding fantasy in the stacks was the problem, now it's finding good fantasy.
