| Hello Everyone Hello everyone. When I join a forum, I normally join under a nickname of different sorts, but since this is more of a 'resourceful' based (I guess you can say) forum, I've decided to go more of a closer-to-my-name for a username type deal. Anyways, I'm not a big novel reader at all. I'll admit that straight out. I've read one novel in my life - Dan Brown's Digital Fortress. I've tried the Da Vinci Code and I couldn't hold up to the style of writing. I've tried the following novels (and the reasons why I couldn't read them): Books I Just Can't Read Right Now Da Vinci Code - Style of writing. Harry Potter - Seemed kind of repetitive, events seem to happen over and over and nothing catches my attention at the beginning (see further in this post) Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Nothing happens / catches my attention. Lord of the Rings (and The Hobbit) - (too explanitory and lengthy - 50 pages (exaggerated) to explain something that can be explained in one or two sentences). Books I'm Going to Try (Or Just Try) Again Sometime Cell Dark Tower series (I have the first book) Dragonlance Series Ender's Game The Night Angel Trilogy Starcraft Archive But, what I am (at least trying, or just started anyways) is Ian Irvine's Well of Echoes series that I just started Geomancer today. How I mentioned above to check below (which is now) is that for me to be able to get into a book and "stay" in a book, something has to happen almost immediately. I'm not saying it has to happen in the second sentence, but think of how Lord of the Rings is with explaining landscapes and whatnaught - just do that with fighting scenes sort of deal. What I am suprised though is a couple of things that hasn't been written - novels based on the Final Fantasy universe, as well as the Might and Magic universe. I'm a gamer so I know a fair bit of titles. I'm more of a science-fiction reader, but I'd like to read something in the lines of a dungeon crawler in the lines of Might and Magic (how it's in a giant maze similar to how Doom is without the insane weapons). So I guess you can say I'm really picky and very difficult to find something to choose for to help... |

| Re: Hello Everyone Hi Rinman - welcome to the Chrons. You will absolutely love the repartee and chit chat here as it is virtually curt - not lengthy at all - and so you will probably spend ages here hopping from thread to thread. However, you might upset a few of us writers as we need people to read our lengthy tomes. Perhaps we should try and convert you eh? But apart from that, enjoy - it's a great place to be imprisoned (there is no escape, you see)! |

You'll certainly find no shortage of recommendations for books around the place, so hopefully you'll soon find yourself devouring one book after another like most of us hungry bookworms around here. Get yourself over to the Stephen King section and you'll see plenty of reasons why you should definitely continue with the Dark Tower series. And Cell. And I might be able to twist your arm into reading a few other of his books, too..! |

| Re: Hello Everyone Whenever I go to McNally Robinson, I seem to always eyeball certain novels and authors, those being: Blizzard Based Novels (Diablo, Starcraft, Warcraft) Dan Brown Ian Irvine (Reading one of his now) Stephen King Warhammer / Warhammer 40 000 William Gibson I also look at the Dune series and the Shannara series, but they both look very slow...so I really keep pulling my hair out on what I should do type of deal. |

| Re: Hello Everyone It's about...? Just saying, "Read title!!" Doesn't tell me a lot lol... That's like someone saying I like informative books, and me coming and saying, "Read a dictionary!! It's got a lot of information of different words of our language!!" |

| the kiiren boy | Re: Hello Everyone i liked the Dictionary. but i never understood the plot, because they kept having to explain each word as they went along.... ![]() welcome aboard. the problem with SF and F is that the author has to explain the world s/he has created to the reader at some point, otherwise everybody's tramping around the same old vaguely described battlegrounds ad nauseam. So everything will be slow. sometimes the depth and glacial pace makes the books the classics that they are - Lord of the Rings, for example. but if you want something a bit faster, then maybe try Terry Pratchett (The Colour of Magic, Guards! Guards! or Moving Pictures are all excellent places to start). SF-wise, David Weber's Harrington series has some punchy stuff and is a lot different to Warhammer tie-ins. |

| Re: Hello Everyone Well I know they have to describe the environment and so on, but in the sense of Tolkien (I'ma be killed here if I mis-spelled his name...) it doesn't need 50 pages to describe a sword type of deal. So in your second paragraph, this Pratchett guy, The Colour of Magic (Oh yeah, this is a UK board so finally I don't get b****-slapped for adding a 'u' to words like color...like another board I get paid for they almost go, "OMFG YOU ADDED A U YOU'RE BANNED AND FIRED BECAUSE YOU ARE CANADIANISH AND YOU ADDED A U AND...YOU ADDED A U!!!" Anyways (That was fun...), so you mentioned this Harrington series, but word, "and is a lot different to Warhammer tie-ins" - I don't mean to hit you on the wordiness, but I don't follow you on that. |

| the kiiren boy | Re: Hello Everyone my view is as follows: Warhammer - punch, stab, shout, gore, kill, gore, kill a bit more, keep killing. boredom ensues. Weber - sympathetic characters, good plot, shock when they die. borrow "Basilisk Station" from a library and see how you go. |

| Re: Hello Everyone Actually the way you described Warhammer and Weber...that helps A LOT. And I mean a LOT. EVERY time I go to McNally Robinson I seem to always look at the Warhammer 40 000's Blood Raven's Omnibus novel...only thing that I wonder about is how long the "boredom ensues" lasts...because if the as you say, "punch, stab, shout, gore, kill, gore, kill a bit more, keep killing." happens basically right away type of deal, then that's well, (sadly to some - lol - like my Grandma if she was here still) my PERFECT kind of novel. |

| the kiiren boy | Re: Hello Everyone yeah, but all the way through? it has the same effect as banging your head against a wall for three hours solid*. sooner or later, you want a change! that's what "boredom ensues" means.... *note: this effect can also be achieved by listening to Clubland Vol.15 on repeat. |
