Re: Last Post in This Thread Wins!

"You will have heard of 'The Maltese Falcon'"

I shrugged. No one in this town hadn't.

"Well, what you may not know is that as fabulous as the falcon was it was just a trinket compared to the real treasure. Oh everybody's heard the story, the tribute, the fabulous jewel encrusted solid gold bird worth a kings ransom, etc, etc. But the bird was just the decoy. Few people know that when the bird passed around it was always wrapped in a golden blanket. People thought the blanket was just some old piece of cloth that had been coated with gold dust to make it look pretty and protect the statue; they were wrong. Tell me Mr. Tien have you ever heard of the ancient myth of Jason and the Argonauts and the story of 'The Golden Fleece'."

I got out a second bottle and two glasses. I kept the glasses for the respectable customers. The high rollers that look down on taking a swig from an open bottle. I poured two decent slugs and passed one over to the bear. He took it, though by the time I looked across the glass was empty. Yep he was definitely growing on me. I left the bottle on the desk; the bear took the hint and poured another four fingers. He left the glass on the table and held on to the bottle.

The dame had started across the street but I knew we would have a little time before she found my office. Time enough to get his story straight.

Re: Last Post in This Thread Wins!

"Oh yes Tein, the legendary Golden Fleece is real. What do you suppose happened to it after Jason returned with it. The old Greeks never mentioned it again and in any case nobody believes the story. A magical fleece that would cure all illnesses. Why would such a thing be forgotten if it were true. But I tell you, and I tell you straight Mr Tien. It was, it is real. The fleece was everything they said and more. At first Jason used it only for, healing the sick. Soon it became an object of desire. Fought over down the centuries. The Templars had it once though they surrounded it with mystical ceremonies. They called it the Holy Grail. With the downfall of the Templars it was lost again.

A weaver found the fleece and although he realised it must be valuable he knew not it's real worth. He turned the fleece into a blanket. It still retained it's magical healing qualities. He lived for two hundred years. You see Mr. Tein, the fleece could grant the owner eternal youth. The weaver was eventually killed for this knowledge and so it became a trinket again. Passed from despot to despot disguised as a simple protector of a kings ransom in gold and jewels, The Maltese Falcon. Over time people people forgot. A accident, an untimely death in the line of succession and the importance of the blanket became lost and so it was thought The Falcon was the prize. There are those that know the truth. Some ancient druids and a group of monks on a Greek island also seek it. They both have their agents. But what none of them know, and I say this in confidence Tien, strict confidence, is that the the last owner of the fleece unpicked the weavers work and it now just a single thread. A thread of immense value."

I looked at the bear, he seemed relieved to have spilled his story. I didn't believe a word of it but it was obvious he did. If the the sounds of broken glass coming from the further down corridor was anything to go by so did the dame with the red hair. She wanted this bear and wanted him bad. It was time to move

Re: Last Post in This Thread Wins!

Of course the thought would always be in the back of the mind....it wasn't the Golden Fleece, it was....the Golden Fleas!

A "No Prize" for the source of that.

I think TP's notion should be scratched at the earliest possible opportunity....

(And I like stories where mysteries are unravelled.)
