Fat America.

Have to agree with this. You don't really see it until you are away for awhile, otherwise it seems just regular.

I was over in Asia for a bit and when I came back I was seriously shocked.

It was very, very evident everywhere I looked and I am sure it was there before I just hadn't seen it. Most of the people I know who are out of the country for a bit, this is one of the first things they comment on. It was one of the first things I commented on.

It's actually scary.

Yes - it is more than obvious. Whenever I visit the US oversized people are everywhere. But then again Canada is full of them too. Mind you we can claim that we need to be fat to keep warm in the winter.

Re: Fat America.

Not surprising. Food is really cheap over there. I remember when I was there on a business trip a few years back , I drank OJ and milk as a water substitute most of the time as it was so much cheaper compared to home.

The first weekend there, I visited TGIF and was almost full just after the salad. Had to take home most of my baby back ribs and definitely couldn't take in the dessert. The portions were just too large for me, coming from Asia. Unfortunately, I think obesity is slowly creeping up over here as well.

Re: Fat America.

We have way too many unnatural processed foods for lower costs than healthy unprocessed foods in America. Thats part of the problem. That, and honestly, we expect women in America to cook and clean full time, raise kids full time, and have full time careers. One of those has to go. Usually its cooking since cooking and cleaning go hand in hand.

Its our lifestyle expectations and economic situations that drive people to eat unhealthy.

sad but true for a lot of western society.

on the bright side, with the economic crash and higher unemployment, many people are now at home rather than at work and eating out is too expensive, so with a bit of luck they'll be at home cooking real food instead of filling the kids up with ha[[y meals and other addictive junk foods and the next generation will be healthier.
