I've no problem with such per se; it's the almost obscene proliferation of a single type which irks me. Besides... in going too far in that direction, the vampire loses all its power as a supernatural figure and simply becomes a sort of twisted superhero... a particularly bland sort of superhero at that....
Thats why i really dislike the idea of the vampire that is an anti-hero,twisted superhero. I dont want read the stories from their POV, i want them coming up against the human hero. I try to say away vampire stories in regular fantasy.

I really dont like see the obscene proliferation either, in my bookstore Young Adault tagged vampire fiction has taken over like 50% of the shelfs of general fantasy. I hope the trend slows down. The covers that looks erotice romance novels come on....

I will try harder to read more books like Fave Dream, I Am Legend to get away from these soft vampires.

Oh come on guys, what do you expect, it's all the aftermath of the Twilight series. An eruption of teenage vampire novels was bound to happen. Writers want to make money like everyone else, and right now vampire love stories happens to be very popular. My take is, if you don't want to read don't buy it.

I think the trend preceded Twilight by quite a bit, although it certainly gained force with the popularity of that series.

Sure, but we can still complain. We hear enough people complaining about epic fantasy ...

Maybe, but now it seems you can't walk into a bookstore without an entire table of vampire books, I've only noticed that after the twilight "phenomenon"

And I don't want to hear them moan and groan either. If they don't want to read epic fantasy no one is making them.

Re: Sick and Tired of Vampires!!!

The problem is that the only place I have to shop for books is the local Wal-Mart. Wal Mart only has limited space for books. So when almost half of the shelves are filled with vampire books, then they are taking up space that could be filled with something else. I wish Wal Mart would realize that there are more people buying books than just teenaged girls.

Then you would have a problem wizard. Walmart unfortunately follows the popular things. I have to routinely make trips to Borders if I want a book that's not for coloring in.

Re: Sick and Tired of Vampires!!!

But Mirinda, it also follows that if you don't like to hear us complain, you don't have to read this thread.

I can't tell you how many threads I manage to ignore in a single day knowing that their contents will just annoy me. If I added up the number in a year, the sum would be simply tremendous.

But what annoys me most of all, is when the thread is supposed to be about something else, and somebody manages to get in a dig about [fill in your favorite type of fantasy]. This thread, on the other hand, says what it is right on the label.

There were a "Paranormal Romance " shelf in the bookstores i go to way before Twilight cause of Anne Rice,Laurell K. Hamilton etc but the trend got new energy with Twilight thats clear. The shelfs are bigger. They have even made a tv show about an old vampire romance series from 1993 and who now is reprinted cause of the trend being hot again.

I dont care about those books as long they dont overdo it,take too much space in fantasy,sf shelfs. Although i think its a bit sad that my sisters read fantasy only when its Twilight and co.

Re: Sick and Tired of Vampires!!!

Paranormal romance? Seriously? There's a shelf for that?

The only point I'm trying to make is that unless you're like wizard and can't get good books because the shelves are filled with something you don't like. It shouldn't matter what's sitting there because no one is making you read it. Unless they are keeping you from getting something you want. There's no reason to waste energy getting upset over it.

Seems to the the problem isn't, "there are too many vampire books" But "WHY DON'T THEY CARRY ANYTHING ELSE!?"

Re: Sick and Tired of Vampires!!!

I really don't have a problem with vampire books aimed at adults. The bookstores I frequent have a large enough selection of fantasy for adult readers that the vampire books don't yet come close to squeezing everything else out.

As I said, it's the fact that some kids are immersing themselves in this type of book, to the exclusion of more nourishing fare, that disturbs me -- that and the fact that so many parents, teachers, and YA publishers seem to be letting this pass without considering the possible consequences.

And I think it's just as legitimate a concern as, say, junk food and it's impact on children's health.

Just out of curiosity, what series are you talking about? Forever Knight perhaps? Or maybe the revival of Dark Shadows? I actually liked both of those series, but they were way before the current tidal wave of blood suckers. I also like a new show which airs on an adult gay channel called The Lair which is about vampires.
