Re: Kate Elliott Let's see... A plane ticket from Australia to SLC, Utah... Can you swim Gollum? Ha ha! There are two publishers for different areas, UK - orbit books and everyone else - Daw books. I think Australia has both, I'm not sure. But the release dates I gave are for Hardcover books, not Paperback. There are two different covers styles for Orbit and Daw too. I actually like the covers of the UK version better. This is what it says in my UK version of King's Dragon: Orbit A Divsion of Little, Brown and Company (UK) Brettenham House Lancaster Place London WC2E 7EN In King's Dragon America Version it says: DAW Books are distributed by Pengiun USA

Re: Kate Elliott Have to make a correction on an earlier post. Kate Elliott wrote on her website that the publication date for Book #6 of the Crown of Stars Series, In the Ruins is to be release not Jun 28 as posted on Barnes and Noble web site, but Aug 5, 2005. Two months longer... ![]()

Re: Kate Elliott Thanks Alia and yes I can swim, so like does that mean you're getting me a first class ticket to the US via submarine? *asks hopefully* Yes, we get both Orbit and Daw BUT generally OZ will get the orbit version first or in greater numbers. Basically if a book comes out in the UK under say Orbit then we get it about a month or so later. If a book comes out in the US and nothing is scheduled for a while to appear in the UK, then we can wait anywhere from 3 -12 months sometimes before we get that book, although there's always exceptions So like now can you see why I need that ticket to the US? Bye I'm going to sleep.. OH, just watched the Pope's funeral live from Rome (Friday evening our time), quite a moving occasion really.

Re: Kate Elliott My copy of The Golden Key, I find, was autographed by all three authors. I remember seeing each of the three authors at conventions and booksignings over the years, by why didn't I remember all three of them in the same place at the same time? I discovered this only because talking about the book and who wrote what has inspired me to reread. Thanks for the tip about where to see the bookcover, Alia. Although I don't like this one nearly as much as the other DAW covers.

Re: Kate Elliott I like the Jaran books a lot, but I like the Crown of Stars series even more. Partly because I generally do like fantasy better than science fiction, but also, I think, because she has grown as a writer.

Re: Kate Elliott Yes, Jennifer Roberson wrote the first third of Golden Key. I love that book. But I found part one and 3 to be the best. After a second reading part 2 felt better but I'm not fond of the preaching tone of Melanie Rawn's writing. And I didn't find Roberson's writing repetitive at all. If something is repeated it's for a purpose but I don't reacall any of that and I read the book a second time about 6 months ago. I haven't read any of the Crown of Stars books yet. I have them on my shelf. I loved the Jaran series and I'm quite annoyed that Daw didn't let her go on with it at the time. It will take several years for her to be able to go back to it now. I have also read the first book of the Highroad Trilogy. A great, light read. A bit too light for my taste but it does get more complicated as the start of the second book indicates. Space Opera written in an engaging way. Characters that you do care about or are annoyed at. Do read Kate Elliott. ericf

Re: Kate Elliott That's interesting about the Jaran Series ericf. A friend who has already read the four books told me it wasn't finished. So now I'm going to ask a stupid question... Does Daw have that much control over what Kate writes? Can they tell her not to write a story? How does that work anyways? For the Highroad Triology, I'll have to check into that one, sounds interesting. If you haven't finished reading the Crown of Stars then I suggest you ought to. Very good reading with a bit of intrique involved. If you figure out who Alain is let me know... lol Alia

Re: Kate Elliott I wonder whether that was an editorial decision or actually Kate/Alis's own -- to stop writing the Jaran books and move on to the fantasy series. Because I know that she had it in mind to write The Crown of Stars books for quite some time. I remember hearing her read an excerpt from the first book at a convention 10-15 years ago.

Re: Kate Elliott Okay. From what I understand the fourth book of Jaran was titled somthing like Blue Heaven. I'm not totally sure but I think it was partly written when Kate started on Crown of Stars. At the time she said something like that she had always wanted to try something epic in fantasy but that she needed to write a number of books to get into her own style and not make a Tolkien clone. How that fits with her not continuing Jaran I don't know but we are all well aware of the sales figures of fantasy compared to Science Fiction. That was probably one of the reasons sshe did stop writing the Jaran books and started on something new. Check here for som answers: http://www.sff.net/people/Kate.Elliott/faq.html ericf
