Nighteyes

I finished Fool's Fate this week-end. Looking back over the trilogies, there was one character I loved most : Nighteyes.

I'm just curious. What do you think about Nighteyes ? Did you love the wolf ? Was he more clever than Fitz ? Or he managed to show us the hidden part of Fitz ?

Re: Nighteyes

I really liked Nighteyes, but I think I'm bias because I'm an animal lover and liked the idea of an animal taking a strong part in a story.

I really enjoyed the relationship between Nighteyes and Fitz, and felt their scenes were the most interesting
I think the bonding gift in some ways is more interesting than the other family gift.

Re: Nighteyes

......................Possible Spoiler....................

I really felt that in many cases Nighteyes was Fitz's good intentions and in many cases stopped Fitz from becoming a complete fool. Like the time he confronted the Fool well after Nighteyes had died. If Nighteyes had been alive he would have spared Fitz and he Fool all that pain and anguish that arose between them, Nighteyes allowed Fitz to have more of a conscience then he was capable of on his own.

I loved Nighteyes....

The more I read this farseer series the more I begin to think that somehow the Fool is the Pale Woman. And when I think that I can only cringe at the thought. I have just finished Golden Fool and I am waiting for someone to return Fool's Fate to my library.

In the meantime I have Prince of Dog's by Kate Elliot here, and I found another book, The Fifth Sorceress by Robert Newcomb. The latter seems to be a "one time" work by that author but it looks to be interesting.

Re: Nighteyes

I enjoyed the relationship between Nighteyes and Fitz, too. Remember the scene where Nighteyes caught the game rules quicker than Fitz ? I think I love Nighteyes for the same reasons as Fitz : his sane nature without hypocrisy. He had since the beginning a very strong personality. And he saved Fitz several times, like he was born with "an old soul".

The magic skill of the family looks to me like telepathy. Do I believe it more interesting than the Wit sense ? Hmm. Well, it's special anyway.

I'm afraid I'll be the spoiler for you, Rahl. The Pale Woman was really bad and had found death for her cruel behaviour. Remember the Forge people ? She was the guilty one.

The poor Fool was killed after savage tortures by the hands of the Pale Woman. Fitz could save him using both his magic and Wit sense. I cannot say anymore. It's worth reading till the end.

Re: Nighteyes

I actually bawled when Nighteyes died

I loved Fool & also Burrich but Nighteyes, god I wish he was mine!

As for being more clever than Fitz, I don't think so, I think they complimented eachother very well, Nighteyes was more of the parent keeping a rogue child in line and being one with nature was a wiser creature but I think they made a great team!

i love nighteyes. i thought that hobb did that part really well, that that was a nice addition that was carried out brilliant. animals and people bonding isn't that new, but she did that well. and from fools fate, i still, when i look at my cat rubbing against stuff, think that she is saying 'mine'

I believe Fitz said in Assassin's Quest that Nighteyes understood what he, Fitz, could grasp because they were bonded. In the same way Fitz was able to able to touch upon the psyche of the wolf and his perceptions of the world. It seems that each lived in his own domain and train of thought and was able to to get a larger picture because of his connection with the other. Together they created their own unique state of existence. Though I must admit that Nighteyes seemed to be the one of the two witch was more able to step back and view the situation in a more rational light - perhaps because of his distance from the human domain.
He afforded Fitz with an air of philosophical serenity and calm. He was
un-corrupted and wild.

Re: Nighteyes

I can't remember the book or the chapter but there was a part in these stories that stated that the bond went both ways. Some of the animal went to the human and some of the human went to the animal. It went on to say that Nighteyes had become more then he was as a wolf before he bonded with Fitz.

Proof of this was when one bond partner died the other nearly went insane and never quite got over the loss. Why? Well they lost part of themselves when their bond partner died because the bond was that strong. Some of Fitz's human intelligence or sentience went to Nighteyes because he was now aware of his own life.

What Nighteyes did with that....well I think maybe he was not smarter then Fitz but he was much more "matter of fact" because of his animal instincts. That coupled with the portion of Fitz's intelligence that came to him with the bond made it seem as though quite often Nighteyes was the leader of the bond. At least thats how I saw the relationship between them.

Also we have to remember the time when Fitz was resurrected and his entire "self" was in Nighteyes. I think at this time more of Fitz's Human intelligence (I can't think of a better word to use right now) stayed with Nighteyes after that.

Yes! I totally agree

Whenever my cat comes up to me now, all I can think is 'Make a lap, you love me best!'

Re: Nighteyes

Oh yes, I know that one too. When I go to bed, Sherwood (My huge tabby) has to have first consideration. He uses my boobs as: a. A Pillow. b. A spring board for attacking my feet through the quilt. It's really strange, but since reading about the Wit, I look at him in a totally dif way.

Nighteyes is my favorite character in the books, closely followed by The Fool. Both are so mysterious and intriguing.
