Re: New GRRM Update on ADWD Oh well, at least we get most movies released before they do on that side of the Atlantic. I'm just glad that Canada always follows the same publishing and release dates as the US. Except we pay more for the same book with little justification, especially when our dollars are close to parity, the books are often printed in Canada on paper made from Canadian trees...I'm looking at my copy of AGOT and it says $7.99 in the US and $11.99 in Canada...Oh, don't get me started.

Re: New GRRM Update on ADWD Ah, yes TK. Siblings in the discrimination of our dollar, we are. However, at the time I bought AGOT, our dollar was around .65 US (1997 or thereabouts? I forget when AGOT was released). Right now (July, 2009) we sit at .92 US, and parity is expected by year's end, with the Canadian economy solid and the US economy still in the dumper. 18 months ago, one Canadian dollar bought 1.10 US dollars, and there was still a huge discrepancy in pricing at that time. Still getting hosed, north of the 49th Parallel.

Re: New GRRM Update on ADWD Good idea indeed. I plan on being in London in March, so depending on when the book is released, may pick it up there. Clansman: Yes, us hosers keep getting hosed on prices (except prescription drugs of course).

Re: New GRRM Update on ADWD Holly #$#%! I had to spit out my tea from laughing. We have a bird on our $1 coin. A loon to be precise. Hence the nickname: the Loonie http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...verse_view.png

That's okay. Given the current state of things, with China holding about a trillion in US dollars due to the horrible trade deficit with that country, the US will soon be adopting the Yuan. | |

Re: New GRRM Update on ADWD Then it's a good thing that I already speak Mandarin. Yet, if I may be so bold as to attempt to get back to Westeros.... What if Westeros is not the island of Great Britain? What if Westeros is North America? Canadians are Starks. Lannisters are Hollywood. King's Landing is New York. Dorne is the Deep South.

Re: New GRRM Update on ADWD I like it Boaz. Enough with the Euro-centric comparisons already. ![]() I know, I know, we digressed severely there. Seriously though, I usually don't complain but I'm growing tired of hearing about Jack Vance. Oh well, I'm off on vacation for 2 weeks so maybe when I get back there will be something new to talk about.

Re: New GRRM Update on ADWD I think that makes the British Isles... Valyria... a smoking heap of ruins. Of course, then France and the Low Countries would be the Free Cities... <cough> free <cough> free <hack>. I've got to stop drinking before lunch.

Re: New GRRM Update on ADWD Setting aside a minor quibble - the Atlantic Ocean hardly qualifies as a Narrow Sea - what remains of Valyria is off the southern coast of Essos, suggesting that a combination of Sicilia** and the Ìsuli Eoli*** would make a more suitable analogue. ** - which hosts Etna *** - including Stròmbuli
