| Re: New GRRM Update on ADWD I'm not an HBO subscriber and so have only seen HBO series that appeared on free-to-air channels in the UK: basically The Sopranos and The Wire. As far as I know, these (and Six Feet Under, Rome and Showtime's The Tudors) were straight to broadcast works, so it is hard to extropolate from them (given that if there are any books (are there?), they'll be tie-ins sold after the associated transmission). And the Harry Potter phenomenon is not much of a comparison either, given that it's one of those black swans, from which lessons can rarely be learnt. I suppose that there are equivalents. For instance, does anyone know how Showtime's Dexter affected sales of the books? (And do we expect HBO's A Game of Thrones to follow its book more closely than did Dexter? I certainly do.) |

| Re: New GRRM Update on ADWD I think the Dexter and True Blood (to who's success ASoIaF will pretty clearly owe a debt if it does eventually see the light of day) are almost certainly better examples then Harry Potter (which was a bona fide smash hit before the movies saw the light of day). And both series (of books) are much more prominent thanks to their television exposure. I don't think it's just about people who have HBO or Showtime... It's about articles in Time and Entertainment weekly and more prominent positions in the book store. Anecdotally I had never heard of Sookie Stackhouse or Dexter Morgan until they graced the small screen. |

| Re: New GRRM Update on ADWD Most of you guys have probably seen this, but yesterday's update came across rather nice... Not Done Yet Feb. 8th, 2010 at 8:06 PM Spent the day in the rainwood. 1205 pages. More to come. DANCE has now passed A CLASH OF KINGS to become the second longest volume in the series, though still three hundred pages shorter than the monster that was A STORM WITH SWORDS. Mood: hopeful |

And I like 'hopeful' - seems like Martin has got some momentum again. One word question though: Rainwood? | |

| Re: New GRRM Update on ADWD Not Done Yet
But today was a good, productive day. Only problem is that the chapter I finished just now is going to require that I go back and rewrite one of the chapters I finished last week. Minor stuff, though. Shouldn't take more than a day. (Famous last words, I know).
