Favourite Janny Wurts Passage

Many of us have lauded Ms. Wurts' writing ability, and how her vocabulary occasionally requires the reader to consult Mr. Roget's big book of words. For me, I have always felt when reading that she reaches into my brain, and pulls me into the story, so it feels like I am a specter floating above what is happening. Sometimes I am so carried away by the beauty of her prose, at a particularly beautiful passage, that I read it over and over before moving on.

Therefore, this thread is dedicated to finding and posting those parts of her books, no matter the series, that you find exceptional, and for whatever reason. It can be transcendant beauty, scintillating dialogue, grand description, or humour. Whatever you like, and why. The only rules are that:

1. After showing the passage, you must identify the book and location, so as to give a proper citation;
2. You must say why you think the passage is your favourite, and really give reasons; and
3. You can have more than one favourite, but you can't post them together.

Simple enough? I won't go first, as I don't want to influence anyone with my choices (yes, I have more than one favourite, for different reasons). If no one posts anything (though I suspect Grimward has one a-waitin'. Decisions, decisions) in a few days, I'll hop in with my own.

Re: Favourite Janny Wurts Passage

This is the kind of thread which probably suits people with a memory. You probably have one, Clanny (you're a lawyer I seem to recall?). Those of us who make do without one must either reread all those blasted books (probably not a bad idea - but can't fit it in just yet) or randomly skim and see if we spot anything worthy.

So, it'll be randomly skimming for me, then!

Re: Favourite Janny Wurts Passage

I have a few. But I can't remember where to find them.

I may be able to find my favourite so far though.

The bit where Arithon is affected by the Curse and Dakar and Caolle have to try and stop him in his room.

And another bit on the ship where Caolle shows those "witches" who's boss

I know I have a few more but will have to have a think.

I'll post again soon.

Re: Favourite Janny Wurts Passage

BEFORE WE GO ANY FURTHER, PLEASE TRY TO AVOID SPOILERS!!!!

Readers like Ross, who have only got to Vastmark, could be badly spoiled, and there is a lot of mystery and suspense in this series that could be needlessly spoiled.

If a spoiler is present (some passages can be spoiler free), start your post accordingly:

SPOILERS!!!

Oh, quit pirating thread ideas from Trystane's web site already, your Clansmanship sir!

Actually, since other authors here have similar such offerings, it does seem only fair.....

And my favorite will have to wait, at least until friend Ross catches up, I'm afraid.....

Hmmm...this is going to be an interesting thread to play I think. I'm a Wurts fan too but blowed if I remember specific passages.

Fabulous prose stylist and nice lady to boot but for the moment I shall observe with interest...

Aw, c'mon, Gol, or we'll have to hit you with inclusion in Australian drinking songs, thusly:

"I love to have a beer with Gollum
I love to have a beer with Gol
Oh, we drink in moderation,
And we never ever ever stay past last call
We drink at the Town and Country
Where the atmosphere is great!
I love to have a beer with Gollum,
'Cause Gollum's me mate!

So, pony up with the prose!

"Pirating" is such a nasty word. I would much rather say "honoured by emulation". A good idea, after all, is a good idea, and deserves to be shared!

Yes, I know I haven't been online lately, but my wife had to be induced on the sunday afternoon, and Robert Ian Bradbury was born 0012 h Tuesday 10 March 2009. However, we only came home this monday, and I haven't had any time until now to pop online.
And I haven't had a chance to read anything for a while.
Will be sure to start thinking of a passage to post.
Cheers
Adam

*Gets out the champagne*

Wooo Hooo! Many Cheers for Dek, Ms. Dek and Dek the Younger (have to get back to masking his identity). Congrats, Dek; that's GREAT NEWs. All doing well, I hope? Am assuming you meant February? Either that, or Australia is many hours further ahead of the States than I thought....

Yes. I did mean Tuesday 10th Feb 2009.
Lack of sleep got me to mix up the date.

Thanks for the congrats.

Re: Favourite Janny Wurts Passage

Figured it was the sleep that got ya. No imminent cure for that, I'm afraid, unless you're one of the very few whose new child sleeps most of the way through the night at 6 weeks. Either way, you're quite welcome! Am hoping you dropped off to catch 29.6 winks (see previous comment regarding sleep!).

Re: Favourite Janny Wurts Passage

That is great news, and Dek, you have been missed. Remember what I said in the Lounge about diapers. Take the lead hand, man, and you won't regret it! Foot rubs for the mummy are a good idea too.

I have a teensy-weensy celebration. This is my six-hundredth post on the Chrons. Thought I should post my milestone in Janny's forum.
