Police adopt uniform hijab
So any comments?
Is this a good idea that will allegedly encourage minorities into the Police Service or is it an example of the allegedly growing islamic influence in this country?

I think the important thing is that the police officer is able to communicate fully with those with whom they are dealing (victim, suspect or witness), which means that their full face should be in view**. That is still the case here; going further than this would be a mistake, but I can't see that happening.

** - I did, though, see on the TV a policeman at one of the yesterday's refinery picket lines with a scarf covering almost all his face; but nothing was really happening there and in this weather, I can't blame anyone for covering up.

Personally, I don't see the difference between a hajib and a baseball cap or scarf other than its cultural connotations, so I think its a good thing.

A similar situation occured here in Ireland a few months ago, a Sikh attempted to join the Gardaí (police) but was denied due to the fact that you can't wear a turban. A knock on effect was that they started looking at stopping catholic guards from openly wearing the cross around their necks.

The reasoning was when you are approached by an officer of the law they should only be identifiable by the uniform.
