This is part of a letter posted to Brannon Braga by "shadowsix" of the roddenberry.com forum:

"This Enterprise (of 2151) seems in many ways far in advance of the original Enterprise and has many technologies that in a logical progression of a civilization wouldn't necessarily exist 200 years before (Voyager's time). Phase pistols, transporters, etc. You make it seem as if there was no innovation in technology for 200 years, just progression of technologies that the other races have created. Gee why did Capt. Pike have Lasers? Starfleet must not have liked him.

I'd be afraid if you were tasked to do a show of life of the 18th century, it would probably show wooden aircraft carriers and mechanical TV's in that time period."

I had to laugh when I read that.
