Starchaser: The Legend of Orin

This is one of the fondest movies from my childhood (I was too young for Star Wars first time round! )

The plot centres around a yound man named Orin who lives in a hellish underground place called "Mineworld". This is run by the all-powerful 'Zygon',the self-proclaimed God of mineworld, and his robot guards.
Whilst digging, Orin discovers the hilt of a sword which speaks to him and tells him of a greater world above, to which he must led his people.
After a heart-breaking confrontation with Zygon, Orin escapes Mineworld and discovers the outside world. However, the first foray into this world is disasterous and only quick thinking on his part spares his life.
He encounters a brash smuggler named Dagg and a female princess named Kallie whom he eventually convinces to help him fight Zygon and lead his people to freedom.

As you've no doubt guessed, the movie has ripped off Star Wars unashamedly, but I found it genuinely frightening and entertaining as a child and still take a guilty pleasure in enjoying it today.
I find the characters (with the exception of Kallie) to be more rounded and better developed than their Star Wars counterparts.
The threat to the main characters is real and some pay the price!!

The 'comic relief' in the movie is provided by Scooter (the computer in charge of Dag's ship) and Silica - a robot *ahem* "pleasure droid" purchased by Dagg.

This is a grown-up (even if animated!) version of the star wars series and I would throughly recommend it as enjoyable fodder for anyone aged 8+

I enjoyed this film as well, and so does my 6yr old daughter although she doesn't appreciate some of the humour.

I have been waiting for a sequel to this film.

I do wonder why they don't make more of these sort of cartoons?

Probably because it completely bombed when it came out!!
Shame really as it was the first somewhat 'adult' cartoon I watched and I really enjoyed it a lot (hence my review and somewhat obsessive search for a copy on DVD! )

You have did me a favor here as I remember this film from around 10 years ago, though I had forgotten all about it until now! I think I will have to try and pick it up and watch it again, I remember it fondly and hope it has stood the test of time.

Good luck trying to find it!
I eventually got a second hand ex-rental VHS of it, but it's not easy to get a hold of these days!
