| Re: Favorite instrumental solo I agree with the earlier posters about Dave Gilmour of Pink Floyd's solo on Comfortably Numb. You just can't beat the Earl's Court live version (on the Pulse DVD). This solo just does something to me every time I hear it. Great stuff. I also like a lot of the solo guitar parts throughout Dark Side of the Moon and the mornful saxophone solo on Shine On You Crazy Diamond also by the Floyd. One of Mike Oldfield's bass guitar solos on the little known album Hergest Ridge is also very powerful, menacing, relentless and always building up and up... How about the sublime slide guitar in the middle section of Eric Clapton's Layla (played by one of the Allman brothers I believe)? |

| Re: Favorite instrumental solo Eric Clapton's solo at the beginning of "Have You Ever Loved a Woman?" He's a great guitarist, and this solo will almost break your heart. He was in love with George Harrison's wife at the time, and the whole album screams with that pain. "Layla" is more popular, but try this one to really see how it was tearing him apart. Also, Jimi Hendrix's "Star Spangled Banner" from the morniing of day three at Woodstock has to be mentioned. Seminal solo from the best ever.... |
