"Michael Shanks is Professor of Classics and Cultural Anthropology at Stanford University. He is one of the world's foremost archaeological thinkers, and author of many works including Experiencing the Past, Classical Archaeology of Greece (1996), and Art and the Greek City State (1999)." I think I've found definitive info on this... http://www.stanford.edu/dept/classic...os/shanks.html has a photo and complete biography of the author.

No, I don't think so. I'm afraid you have the wrong person in mind. Michael Shanks, the actor is not a professor of Archaeology in real life. He's an actor! Nice try though.
It would have been a great choice to have a real professor play a professor on television. However, I don't think they teach acting while working on a doctorate!
Cheers!
