Jack was exasperated. This Gou’ald kept throwing him curves and he was tired of it.

O’Neill walked over to the bench where Kha'sekhem lay and kicked one of the legs.

“Hey!” he commanded of the Gou’ald. “Is that it? Is that the best you can do? No … ‘Do my bidding or I will crush you!’ No… ‘Kneel before your god!’ No declarations of ‘Insolence’?”

O’Neill looked down at Kha'sekhem. The young man hadn’t budged since lying down.

“Hey!” Jack repeated again, kicking the bench harder. Despite the vibrations, the Gou’ald remained still.

Carter and Teal’c had been steadily advancing closer to the Colonel’s position and now stood only a yard behind him. Jack heard them and turned sharply around. He threw his arms up in the air in complete vexation.

“I GIVE UP”, declared O’Neill. He looked back and forth between his two teammates, his eyes resting on Teal’c.

“Teal’c”, O’Neill began, “Have you ever seen anything like this? I mean what is this … Diet-Gou’ald, Gou’ald Lite, all the snake with only half the homicidal-maniac obsession? Is this not the most sorry-assed excuse of a poser god we have ever had the displeasure of encountering?”

Carter looked at Jack. He was slowly de-evolving before her eyes. The man was clearly on his last common sense straw.

O’Neill noticed Carter’s concern and turned his attention to her.

“Carter!”, Jack’s voice was continuing to raise its volume. “Can you believe that I got out of bed for this garbage? I mean what, I’m sure you and Teal’c were doing SOMETHING important on the base before we got orders to come here, right? What are we suppose to relay back to Hammond?” Jack made exaggerated gestures with his hands. “ Having a wonderful time on Abydos Sir, can’t wait to see you. P.S. We met a Gou’ald named Kawhatever who claims to be Daniel’s son. We’d love to tell you more but he’s currently taking a ………………..NAP!”

Jack screamed the final word in the direction of the bench, took off his cap and slammed it on the ground.

The three SG1 members stood in silence for several seconds. They all watched the bench. The Gou’ald remained inactive.

Carter began to hesitantly walk towards Kha'sekhem. She glanced at Jack for permission to continue.

O’Neill had retrieved his hat and was pounding it on the side of his leg in an attempt to remove the dust and sand.

“Go ahead, be careful”, he sighed, sanctioning Sam’s plan to approach the Gou’ald. “Watch your step, we haven’t patted him down, he could have anything.”

“I don’t think he’s going to make a move Sir”, Carter answered. “I can hear him snoring.”

“That’s just peachy”, O’Neill returned. Jack lowered his head and emitted a puff of air. Carter hoped that he was venting some of the hot steam that had built up, threatening to cause his head to completely blow off.

Sam returned her gaze to the bench. She was now within a half- foot of the young man. She peered down at him. Although he was laying sideways, his back to Sam and his hair splayed around his face, Carter could make out most of his features. She really hadn’t had a chance to see him up close, and she took a moment to study him. It was true that at first glance the Gou’ald did resemble Daniel. But up close, Sam realized that the resemblance was mostly due to similar physical features, like hair cut and color. Kha'sekhem could possible pass for Daniel’s younger brother, but he was no Daniel doppelganger.

Carter listened to the slight snoring sound that the Gou’ald was emanating. Now that she was practically on top of him, she realized that it wasn’t really snoring; it was more of a wheezing. His breaths seemed to be coming at abnormally quick intervals. She furrowed her eyebrows and leaned closer.

“Careful Carter”, she heard Jack offer in the background. He was now a few feet behind her, standing next to Teal’c.

Sam reached out tentatively and touched the Gou’ald’s hair. When he failed to react to her contact, she began to brush the excess hair from his face. Sam placed a cupped hand on his forehead and then the back of her hand on his cheek. He felt a tad warm.

“He feels a bit hot Sir”, she said, turning her head around to face Jack and Teal’c. She narrowed in on Teal’c.

“Teal’c, are they suppose to be hot? I don’t recall the Gou’ald we have run into necessarily having elevated body temperatures.”

“Nor do I “, replied Teal’c.

Carter swung her question to Jack, who shook his head no.

“I think he might be sick”, she offered, slightly shrugging at the two men.

As Sam turned around to look at the sleeping Gou’ald, she placed her hand back on his cheek but yanked it quickly away when she realized that the young man was turning his head from a sideways position to face her directly.

He blinked rapidly several times before opening his eyes fully. He seemed to struggle momentarily with focusing but then stared intently at Sam.

He reached out and grabbed her wrist.

O’Neill and Teal’c immediately raised their weapons and pointed them at Kha'sekhem.

Carter, maintaining eye contact with the Gou’ald, raised her free hand in a “stop” gesture, signaling to Teal’c and the Colonel that for the moment, everything was ok.

“Let go of my wrist”, she calmly requested of the Gou’ald. He promptly dropped it.

The two continued to stare at each other.

“I wanted to get your attention” Kha'sekhem directed at Sam.

“Well, you got it”, Carter tersely stated.
