Fair point

Then there's the fact that some scientific discoveries actually help to harm the environment, like the atom bomb. The synopsis mentions that the environmental problems are man made, and could have much to do with their advanced discoveries in science.
Fair point. In fact I like it.

That's the beauty of the synop. It can't tell everything, but can make us want to read his vision to find out.

Edit: Oh, and congrats on your 700th post, TEIN

Re: OK Final vesrion 4 now!

Well I must have created something mildly interesting -- creating so much debate.

I will take this opportunity to say;

(a) At no point does the tale talk to any degree about distances and so on, just leaves that bit to your imagination. Someone rightly eluded to the Dr. Who, don't remember ever worrying how they got where they were going, just accepted it...

(b) The novel concentrates on -- The problems we may be creating -- The emotional voyage -- a love triangle -- Where did we start here or... -- The religious undertones (incidentally, Noah’s ark is in Genesis, that covers more than one religion being in the old Testament) -- Forestation -- Spiritual vs. Material (2 nil it finished lol) -- A computer that has aspirations toward emotions -- A suicide -- SETI signals -- Overall it is a journey of thought and so you see my difficulty. 750 pages and barely time to make coffee!

(c) When captain Constantine Adenbrook (as in heart hospital, Think about it) talks about speed, Jez says "that went straight over my head."

And we only think we need a hyper drive, if we knew we would have gone by now, whose to say that when in open space, with no gravitational influences that, well we just do not have the remotest idea. Lets look at this way, say you wanted to drive to Newcastle from London and you had to go on 'B' roads, 6 days or 6 hours? and if you wanted to go to Mafiea1 which is just beyond Andromeda on 'B' roads, which is where we are currently in the scheme of things. If you think, how long ago was it that only birds flew! I remember a film about some kids going into space in a cardboard box.

Overall I love the debate though, I have gotten so many ideas from you guys.

keep it coming>>>

Steve do I wear sunglasses, probably not, but I like the emote, and there we have it, subjective...

Just a thought -- if you drive a 'Delorian' at 88 mph it is unlikley that it will go back in time' -- you may get a speeding ticket. The point is did any one care?

Going by the £££ and $$$ the answer I suspect is no.

Well, you're right, but if that 'Delorian' would be equipped by a flux capacitor that eats to plutonium, which is needed to produce to 1.21 gigawatts to make the time machine work, then that would be totally another matter. There wouldn't be a car or a driver to give a speeding ticket. Just seeing it happening would make such a great story to tell to other people. Even better, if you would get a picture or video from it. Promise. The 'interwebs' would go mad.

Re: OK Final vesrion 4 now!

I found this interesting,

Turkey City Lexicon

Very much covers some points we have been debating::::

  • "As You Know Bob"
A pernicious form of info-dump through dialogue, in which characters tell each other things they already know, for the sake of getting the reader up-to-speed. This very common technique is also known as "Rod and Don dialogue" (attr. Damon Knight) or "maid and butler dialogue" (attr Algis Budrys).
  • The Edges of Ideas
The solution to the "Info-Dump" problem (how to fill in the background). The theory is that, as above, the mechanics of an interstellar drive (the center of the idea) is not important: all that matters is the impact on your characters: they can get to other planets in a few months, and, oh yeah, it gives them hallucinations about past lives. Or, more radically: the physics of TV transmission is the center of an idea; on the edges of it we find people turning into couch potatoes because they no longer have to leave home for entertainment. Or, more bluntly: we don't need info dump at all. We just need a clear picture of how people's lives have been affected by their background. This is also known as "carrying extrapolation into the fabric of daily life."
So, in essence they get there in 86 days, it is what happens on the way, and when they get there.

I want to fix a, 'flux capasitor,' to my keyboard.

Someone earlier mentioned the 60's -- time travelling "pills." --??

The whole article is worth a read.
