Late developers

I spent years trying to get my son to read, bedtime stories, buying him lots of different books, trips to library etc before deciding it was a lost cause.

Then a few weeks back I dared to cross the threshold of what he calls his bedroom and there lying on the bed was an open book. I'm thinking his friend had left it behind but earlier this week he asks for some recommendations. I suggest Magician at first but then couldn't remember what box it was in. He is now completely engrossed in The Lies of Locke Lamora.

After years of trying to persuade him to read something other than games instructions he discovered the joys of the written word himself. Goes to show its never to late

Good news, Nixie...you realise that he'll never have his nose out of a book now...

Re: Late developers

Good deal! Took my brother over 20 years before he would read anything like a book for fun...

Re: Late developers

It happens. My brother, age 14 tomorrow, will read some of Gary Paulson's small, middle-school classed books, but he's still not much into a real novel.

I'm hoping, but it doesn't always work, either....

Re: Late developers

Should told 'm it was too technical for them but you'd show 'm how to use the device (book) for 10 bucks.

Re: Late developers

I used to hate to read, until I found some fantasy books of my dads and became a crazy addict. I used to think all books were boring and hard to understand. It just takes one book that a kid can connect with to start the frenzy. Ironically enought, it was Fiest that got me hooked.

Re: Late developers

yep there is never lost hope - I was definatly a late developer in reading (took me till uni to really start reading!). The only downside is that there are some classics that you just can't read once your that bit too old - guess I have to wait till the other end of the time scale before I can enjoy them.

Re: Late developers

You didn't say how old he was, but did you consider asking him to look at the Narnia series? That could give him a further push.

Re: Late developers

Good for you both! I have a three and a six year old and I do everything I can to help them fall in love with books. I hope to god it works.

Re: Late developers

Good news then, Nixie! You might be able to stay on the computer longer!

My 3 girls, the eldest being 11 years, are all into reading fantasy. All encouraged by me when I used to write them fairy stories.
