| Re: Lyrics that make you go HMMM? Snap's Rhythm Is A Dancer has always made me wonder... What's a "Source Companion"? I have never liked the lyric "I'm serious as Cancer when I say 'rhythm is a dancer'" Also, how is rhythm a dancer? Like I say, always confused me somewhat! xx |

| Re: Lyrics that make you go HMMM? The Killers' Human has a few that make me wonder "are we human or are we dancers?" as if the 2 are mutually exclusive, when I believe the opposite is the case (only humans dance for pleasure and entertainment) |

![]() I just wonder though, if some of these punk rockers are not happy as they are and would like to be a hippie. ![]() There is another song that has me wondering about some of the lyrics but I've forgotten it at the moment!

What that is, is basically a beatbox or vocal approximation of what a dj (or "scratch dj" or "turntablist") often does with the sound "ahhhhhhhh", which is one of the two most scratched samples in turntablism (the other being "freeeeeessssshhhh"). So basically the "zig", "a", and second "zig" each represent the sound made when the vinyl record is moved by hand back and forth under a phonographic needle. So "zig-a-zig" represents three strokes in what is called a "baby scratch" over the "ahhhhhhhhhhhhh" sample. In this song, the "zig-a-zig" is a stand in for the "in-and-out" of sexual intercourse, and the "ahhhhhhhh" stands for the orgasmic climax. So now you know why this song was so popular around the world among 8-12 year-old girls. ================================================== ======== In defence of dance music: It's dance music. It doesn't have to have lyrics that make sense. Hell, most people are high on something when they listen to it anyway. I think most have lyrics to help distinguish themselves from other songs; and maybe to give the semi-conscious part of your brain something to chew on...hum to...that sort of thing. The words don't matter unless they're overtly sexual. There's a song by Buckcherry that is very popular around here, pretty much only because the chorus is: Quote:
Someone posted Nirvana. I loved the hell out of that record in highschool. I'd laugh at the lyrics...I like to think they're ironic. Actually, I never really used to listen to lyrics at all for the most part. Just the beat, groove and how it all felt really. One day, for some reason, around the time I graduated highschool, I started realizing that....none of the words in any of the songs I liked (classic rock and alternative)....actually rhymed! It disgusted me. So basically any conversation you've ever had could be a song. Quote:
That's around the time I discovered hiphop. Where most songs had reams and reams of intricately rhyming verses. Very cool! But at a club...if you just want to shake your ass...or see some ladies shake their asses...then the lyrics just don't matter. So of course, Britney Spears and Fergie, et.al. are talentless. But so what? They've got some very talented producers making very catchy, danceable tracks for them and putting their digitally-aided voices on them; and I'm happy to say that I've shaken my talentless ass to those songs many-a-time. It's fun! Put the books down sometimes! Go out! Get drunk! Grab a pole! It's quite interesting

And there's a colouring pad in the back of my head and I want to fill you in. And I was nothing more than an impression of myself and I want to fill you in. Yeah you could lay your' body in the hollow where I used to be and you could fill me in. Josh Pyke - Fill You In |

Yay I love The Killers! I agree that a lot of their lyrics don't make a whole lot of sense, but at least they are original. Plus, to me, that song DOES hold some meaning. "I'm on my knees looking for the answer" precedes "are we human or are we dancer?", but I personally think he's asking that question BECAUSE it doesn't make sense...just like so many answers don't make any sense...I feel like I'm just running in circles in my mind, so none of that likely makes much sense...ANYWAY, I also wanted to bring up Beck lyrics. None of them make any sense! At least not in a linear sense. Every line follows its own train of thought, so when listened to for a story nothing makes sense. This really restricted me listening to some of his songs for a long time, but then I read an interview by him, which may also explain why other artists have lyrics that don't make sense (though it's also possible they are just crazy as opposed to crazy and BRILLIANT the way Beck is). In this interview, he explains that he writes about a particular feeling or experience, but he writes about it in such a way that it doesn't make sense when looked at logically. Then again, when are feelings ever logical? ![]() "I've got the Devil's haircut in my mind..."
