Re: I'm new :) [quote=chrispenycate;1187922]From someone who's (possibly) not quite the most computer illiterate on the site, but nearly: I'm one of those who is enthusiastically writing, although I can't say exactly how many chapters it runs to; it isn't yet organised like this. So, any and all fantasy, or do you have favourite authors/books/worlds? Not that it makes much odds; you'll find enthusiasts for most of the major authors, and opinions on many others (not always compatible opinions, certainly, but that's what discussion's about. The above is a quote....I am new to forum posting, please excuse my ignorance and be easy on me. I really like George R.R Martin, Richard adams, Karen Miller, Scott Lynch is ok. But the reason I'm writing my own is because I've never found a writer that has exactly suited me,(although Richard adams is coming the closest to it) so I am literally writing the story for myself. Not crazy about battle stories, although a little is ok, I like personal stories, where you feel like you really know your characters and their relationships. I like a sense of humor in a character relationship, as I do in life I like a mystery about the scenery, a little creepiness maybe, but beauty at the same time. The trick is turning all into sentences that make sense, as I'm sure you know.

Re: I'm new :) Hmmm. You like George R.R. Martin, but not crazy about battle stories? So political intrigue and character development suit you, but not too much of the mass armed conflict. Appears you like one shot novels and epics, but you are writing to suit yourself (is there a better reason for doing anything). I recommend that you try Guy Gavriel Kay, especially Tigana or The Lions Al-Rassan. As you like Martin, but not battles, stay away from Steven Erikson's Malazan series, as he goes bigger and better on the battles than does Martin. Way bigger (his second book in the Malazan series is one big long running battle). I would send you to Janny Wurts' Wars of Light and Shadow, because the intrigue and suspense is great, characters fabulous, and there isn't a battle every other chapter (Three come to mind in 8 large books, though there are much smaller clashes in between). Great themes, too. Try her one-shot novel To Ride Hell's Chasm to see if you care for her style, and that way you won't get invested in a big series if you don't (which I think is unlikely if you like high quality writing).

Re: I'm new :) Thank you, I'm always looking for a great new read, and when you walk into a bookstore, as the old saying goes, you can't judge a book by it's cover. Because trust me, I've tried that, and got myself into a mess of a horrible story more than once.
