While I've not yet had a chance to read the entirety of the piece, what I have is quite nicely done... and the interweaving of the journal with the story works rather well, overall. (Incidentally, this is also something Klein used in his The Ceremonies, to good effect. I'd say more, but it might spoil some discoveries along the way for you.)

One thing puzzles me, however:

The second story takes place in Hodgson’s mythological creation, the Sargasso Sea, an otherworldly, hidden sector of oceanic territory.

Am I misreading this, or are you saying here that Hodgson invented the Sargasso Sea? If the latter is the case, I'm afraid that's not at all the case. Tales of the Sargasso go all the way back to at least the 15th century. It has long been a region used for storytelling purposes, with its mysterious weeds and graveyard of ships. As Wikipedia notes, the first Johnny Quest adventure takes place there, as did the Doc Savage story The Sargasso Ogre, where Doc almost meets his (physical) match.

Of course, if I'm misreading the above sentence (or its meaning in context) then please disregard everything I've said....
