Re: NaNoWriMo 2008 - any takers?

I signed up last night, and luckily for me, an idea, with a nice cast, and a nice plotline, fell into place today. *cracks knuckles*

I'd like to, but the thought of starting a third project with two others heavily underway just makes my head hurt. Two's been hard enough.

I'll try. May as well do something productive with my brain.

Hey, planet Earth, stop eating up the nanowrimo bandwidth! I'd like to log in, dang it.

Decided not to do it. Mainly because I have exams and final assignments and such this month, and I AM FREAKING OUT! Well I'm not freaking out that much at this point in time, but I feel I will be .

Re: NaNoWriMo 2008 - any takers?

Great to hear there's some interest here - good luck to anyone who decides to take part.

I've done 3,785 words so far, so I've managed to get a whole two days into NaNo without getting behind on my word count - must be some kind of record!

Unfortunately, the other 28 days of November aren't all weekends, unlike the first two...

Do share your progress, those who are taking on the challenge - and/or let us know your username on NaNo, so we can see how you're doing on there, if you prefer.

Re: NaNoWriMo 2008 - any takers?

Hi Patrick! Nice to know someone else is taking part. I've hit just over 4,000 and I've yet to do any today, so for the time being I'm pleased. Of course, I haven't hit the dreaded middle section, where I'm likely to be pulling my hair out!

I think this is a great exercise in self-discipline though, which is mostly why I am doing it. I'm a stubborn old goat (at the grand age of 26...lol) and if I set myself a goal I will reach it, damnit. And then of course, I have to try and match it without the NanNoWriMo to back me up.

What's your story about?

Re: NaNoWriMo 2008 - any takers?

So far I'm up to just under 8,000 words - a little behind target, but not too bad.

RcGrant - my story is a historical thriller, set in ancient Greece. The story revolves around a plot to assassinate the Athenian leader Pericles on the day that he opens the Parthenon. What's your story about - and are you RcGrant on NaNo too? My username is the same there...

Dreir - it's never too late to start NaNo! I'm sure you can write 10,000 words later today, and then you'll be on target like the rest of us!!

Re: NaNoWriMo 2008 - any takers?

Although I'm not officially in NaNo, I'm now up to 3.3k since wednesday (I've had to write-off the first 4 days). Hmm.. another 7k words in the next 10 minutes or so sounds just about doable to me!

My story is set in a world where homosexuality, while not illegal, is as good as taboo, because internationally, a law has been passed (like in China) where there can only be one child per family. Therefore, people are against homosexuality because of the diminished chances of pro-creation.

Anyway, the main character is a teenage boy who is sent to a psychiatric institution, by his parents, for homosexual rehabilitation.

I'm Bloodyrose82 on NaNo. Feel free to add me. I haven't updated there in a couple of days because I've been working extra hours - my novel for the last two days is handwritten, but I'm determined to type it up by the end of the weekend. The number score is my motivation!

I like the idea a lot, but I'm confused (I often am, it seems). Has this law been brought in as a method of population control? If so, why would the diminished chances of procreation be an issue?

But like I said, I like the premise and just your brief description of it has certainly made me want to read it. Well done.

Yeah, I'm also confused. Why the one-baby rule if not for population control? And if it is for population control (and I have a hard time working out what else it would be for), the marginalisation of homesexuality doesn't make sense...

Re: NaNoWriMo 2008 - any takers?

Hey guys. I figured it was simple: whatever rules and regulations we impose on ourselves as humans, we still want to pass on our genes no matter what. And if you are only allowed one chance to pass on those genes, and to keep them going, then you aren't going to want your child to be gay, and thus put pay to keeping that line going. You're going to want a fertile heterosexual child. So not only would gay kids be targeted, but so would the infertile, the disabled, etc. Some people, especially more traditionally minded, would be of this mind, and once something becomes a popular notion, it's self-fulfilling anyway.

I got the idea from watching a lot of parents, mine included, putting pressure on their children to have children to continue the biological line (or indeed the name - in this situation boys would be prefered over girls too, though logic dictates both are needed), and anything that can possibly get in the way of that is 'a very bad thing'.

Hope that makes a bit more sense. Glad I'm being challenged on it though - makes me realise I need to add more detail of that side of things.

Thanks for explaining, that makes a lot of sense now. I think the result of this, though, would be a society where Homosexuality is acceptable... but only for other people. I also think you would see a situation which is largely male as you'd want your child to be a healthy, fertile, heterosexual male in order to carry on the family name as much as the genetic code.

This could offer a further element for this couple who are subjecting their child to such an institution. After all, they could have sacrificed daughters or disabled children in the past, and are desperate to justify this by continuing the line.

Once again, good work. This is a very promising beginning!
