matrixy memory jack

if you've watched the matrix, the chars there can download heaps of information/user knowledge they can apply directly and instantly.

I was wondering if there's other ways to do this that are floating around as ideas nowadays. Some sort of osmosis technique that has a plausable description to it maybe.
And If they had to use jacks and electrodes to send bursts of electricity to the brain to get things done, what kind of materials would they be using in the future? I think a fiber optic cable is used nowadays, (not sure) to stimulate impulses to nerve endings (or something or other). Is there a better material?

Anyone have ideas about this?
it's for a w.i.p.

Hi Chimeco

I'm gonna sound like a Hamilton pimp here

Look for 'The Nights Dawn Trilogy' by Peter F Hamilton. He's not the only author to suggest the use of a sub-cranial set of neural nanonics but he does it quite well.

The other idea he presents is that of didactic courses, which are esentially courses 'learned' through direct implantation into the brain via the optic nerve.

Neither of these ideas are all that far from reality, scientists have recently taught monkeys to control robotic arms via a filament electrode implanted into the motor centre of their brains, and the idea of didactic learning would be something akin to hypnotism.
It would essentially have to be a practice where the conscious mind was put on hold and the information presented directly to the subconscious for dissemination and storage.

There are loads of ideas out there, why don't you create one of your own, then maybe in 50 years you can smile at a group of people on a forum mentioning how your idea is now almost a reality

L. Ron Hubbard included this method in Battlefield Earth too.

I've always found these little learning ideas to be completely fascinating - probably because you don't actually have to study, must be my laziness coming out

George Alec Effinger in "When Gravity fails" too.

BTW, the book is sheer fun but yet one of the best scifi I've read these years. Tsusigiri, if you liked Hamilton, give a try to this one.

I'll keep an eye out for it, thanks
