What's the world look like?

I'm currently half way through book two. Took me a while to warm up to the series, however I'm fairy engrosed at the moment. The main problem I have with Erikson's writing is his lack of detailing of the world. I have very little feel as to what the world looks like. It may seem trivial but I like to have a mental picture of the essence of the land. Previously I read Cecilia Dart-Thornton who beautifully rendered her world so maybe I'm making an unfair comparison. I would be interested to know if I'm alone in this belief.

Werthead has a map somewhere, and the thread that held it was lost in the Great Crash of '08.

Perhaps that might be partially reconstructed, Wert?

There are maps at the front of book two. From what I gather as I'm like you middle of book two, (hard going innit!) the Mazlan empire is a bunch of Islands to the north of the planet. The events taking place here in deadhouse is to he south.

Totally willing to be corrected, is there a fan site we can visit?

Nice map Wert. I didn't make myself clear though as I was meaning Erikson's style of writing doesn't describe the surroundings with much detail. He doesn't paint a strong mental picture of the land, ie the trees, the rocks the churning ocean, the drizzling rain etc. The books are mainly concerned with who goes where and does what with whom.

I think I know what you mean Elstor. It seems to me Erikson parrs things down to he bones of the story and explains what of the culture is required to understand the story. His novels so far to me are very dense and hard to follow but yet are very compelling.
