Re: Football (american football to those across the pond!)

After being away for a few days with a connection glitch. I had been using an old address (how was that even possible?) to connect for years. But I found my way back.

Let's see, Ahhh yes.

"Twelve seconds to go. Farve moves to the left. He's getting pressure. He moves back right 5 seconds to go. He throws. Greg Lewis goes up. Touchdown!!

....................

After further review the play stands. One meaningless play later, the cry is heard all over the land of 10,000 lakes. Vikings Win! Vikings Win!

....................

Unfortunately you will note that Farve was flat on the ground when the reception was made. A place he's been far to often. The Viking offensive line is in turmoil and Mr. Farve will not likely last the season. I prospect I predicted long ago, but am now beginning to rue the possibility.

Agreed, Cul. And I wouldn't have thrown Miami in there, either.

Let's see here...

*Rummages around in his standings bag...*

Oh, lookee here:

Cul(Saints) 3-0
Parson(Vikings) 3-0
Pyan (Jets) 3-0
Reiver(Jets) 3-0
Seph(Vikings) 3-0
J(Cowboys) 2-1
Lady(Patriots) 2-1
Ursa(Cowboys) 2-1
Joja(Seahawks) 1-2
Grim (Redskins) 1-2
Cayal (Titans) 0-3

Well, gonna be at least one less undefeated team after next week, what with the Saints playing the Jets.....

Yeah, what was up with those? I assume they weren't throwbacks?

From Wiki:

Quote:
The [Seahawks'] jerseys were designed in honor of the new Major League Soccer team Seattle Sounders FC who also wear a green jersey with blue pants (or in SSFCs case, shorts). It was originally reported by Chris Berman from ESPN during the Week 3 predictions of his 2-Minute Drill portion of SportsCenter and confirmed by QB Matt Hasselbeck. The jersey was based on an April Fools' Day prank by UniWatchBlog earlier that year.

You can add a gutted niners fan to that list.
WS (49ners) 2-1

I suppose I am happy on reflection as I didn't expect the start to be as good as it was, beating the rams, seahawks & cardinals used to be an annual pleasure and a guaranteed route to the playoffs but the last 10 years have been less than kind.

Still, although it's a fairly alien sight to watch the red & gold play like Pittsburgh, a wins a win and we're still in with a shout of doing well this season which is nice. Losing Frank Gore for 2 weeks is a major worry though

Re: Football (american football to those across the pond!)

We have a moderator convention going on here, methinks!

Welcome to the thread, WS. Please feel free to add a 49ers tag to the list, and happy to have you. I think Joja was getting a little lonely with that division all to himself...

Cul(Saints) 3-0
Parson(Vikings) 3-0
Pyan (Jets) 3-0
Reiver(Jets) 3-0
Seph(Vikings) 3-0
J(Cowboys) 2-1
Lady(Patriots) 2-1
Ursa(Cowboys) 2-1
WS(49ers) 2-1
Joja(Seahawks) 1-2
Grim (Redskins) 1-2
Cayal (Titans) 0-3

And the Rams this week for you on your home turf. Of course, if the Skins can beat them....

Re: Football (american football to those across the pond!)

The Rams vs Niners games are the ones I most look forward to (except for playing and hopefully beating the hated Cowboys occasionally, sorry Ursa). They used to be very tight, tense affairs with gunslinging QBs and crushing defence but the stock of both teams have fallen badly in the last 5 years or so. And the Rams have even more injury problems than the niners so hopefully we should have enough in the tank to beat them, though it'll probably be closer than is good for my heart!

To be honest looking at their schedule, the Rams and Browns both have the potential to emulate the Lions of last year but hopefully the Rams can pick up a win (against the cards or seahawks preferably ) as I like their new coach a lot more than Mangini.

Re: Football (american football to those across the pond!)

I'd hate to be a Browns supporter at the moment. I can't believe they hired Mangini, seriously. I love what Mike Singletary is doing in San Francisco, though. Considering the pieces he inherited, it really goes to show what a good coach can do for a team....

Re: Football (american football to those across the pond!)

Me too, Cul. 'Skins could use a little Singletary right about now. He'd never put up with nonsense like that embarrassing DeAngelo Hall hand waving tackle attempt against the Giants.....

I love his quote, I've heard it a few places, about his philosophy: 'We're going to out and hit them in the mouth!' Loses a bit of impact on the screen, though...

EDIT: With all due respect to Ursa, I teeheed... http://upnextinsports.com/2009/10/02...mo-depression/

3-0! Can't argue with that. Shame I haven't had the opportunity to see any of our games yet, though.

Favre vs. the Pack up next. That should be tasty.

No need to apologise; it's good to have a 49ers fan here.

* Fondly remembers the 49ers when Montana was throwing to Rice. *

Re: Football (american football to those across the pond!)

I also fondly remember the 'classic' 49's; two minute warning, two scores down but, hey! Montana-Rice, on-side kick, Montana-Rice! No problem!

Those impetuous youngsters writing off the Jets v Saints should be warned that if thing go bad the Jets tend to get a bit flaky and unpredictable, and with unpredictable you just roll the dice and see what happens (8-man blitz, 5 wide receivers, etc. etc.)
