Re: Football (american football to those across the pond!)

OK, time to return to my, er, administrative duties here. First of all, let's bring the scoreboard up to date:

Pyan 2-1 (Ravens, Ravens, Ravens)
Ursa 2-1 (Falcons, Steelers, Steelers)
LOW 1-2 (Ravens, Panthers, Eagles)
Cul 1-2 (Falcons, Steelers, Eagles)
Parson 1-2 (Vikings, Titans, Steelers)
Grim 1-2 (Colts, Panthers, Steelers)
Wiglaf 1-1 (no pick, Chargers, Steelers)
J-Sun 0-3 (Falcons, Panthers, Eagles)
Werewoman 0-2 (Dolphins, Panthers,
no pick)

Next, here's what I've got thusfar for the Super Bowl:

Pyan - Cardinals
Ursa - Steelers
WJ - Cardinals
J-Sun - Steelers
Culhwch - Steelers
Parson - Steelers
Chopper - Steelers (even though it's for name similarity!)

Lady, please concur regarding the Cardinals. Wiggs, you're up, too! And we hope you've recovered from the Panthers loss, WW; if so, weigh in, madame! Anyone else?

Cardinals--I am going with hopes and America's fondness for an underdog rather than logic.

Well, I said I wanted the Steelers to win, and I think they can so the Steelers are my pick. I would be quite happy for the Cardinals if they won it all though. Can't wait for Sunday!

And if I'd gone with the only team for which I have any physical memorabilia (the Steelers), I'd be 3-0 now (and guaranteed the first equal spot, whatever the result in th Super Bowl).

Hindsight's a wonderful thing though, Ursa...If I'd picked 24, 25, 26, 38, 39, 40, last Saturday, all the Chronners that could would be flying with me to see the Superbowl live...

Took me a second to get what you were saying there. Points? Oh!

Yep, that would be nice.

On Ursa's more modest level, if I'd have just picked for who I was going for I'd have matched your 2-1 with 3 Ravens picks of my own. As is, shouldn't I be last, Grim? My 0-3 is worse than Werewoman's 0-2. (If I can't win this thing, I want to at least be the most worstest. )

Re: Football (american football to those across the pond!)

Praise be, it's on regular telly! I was channel flicking this morning and came across an ad for the Superbowl! I'm wondering if it was always the plan to show it on the mainstream station, or if the fact that an Australian is playing swayed them in the hope of some ratings, but either way I don't care!

Re: Football (american football to those across the pond!)

Glad to hear it, Cul.

As we give no byes in the post-season on this thread, it's hard to rank those who didn't pick for the full slate ahead of those who did, J. The one clear exception to that is where someone (Wiggs and WJ in our case) has more wins. Consequentially, WW gets listed last....(nothing personal, your Wereness!)

Re: Football (american football to those across the pond!)

Well my friends, at last we arrive at the big game. An occasion with demonstrably reduces traffic on the streets of the US for its duration, whose broadcast is seen across the globe (hopefully, all free of charge now? Seems like both our good Brits and Aussies here have found it's location, no?), and the hype for which is enough to make anyone say, "Get on with it, already!"

Any last minute change of heart? Insights to share with your fellow Chronners?

No insights but I do agree with the "Get on with it" and I'm glad it's here.

Re: Football (american football to those across the pond!)

My strategy has failed again! I picked the team I wanted to lose, but they won. (Sigh!) But it was a great game (drum roll please!) possibly the greatest Super Bowl game ever. So many of them have been clunkers. This game had everything. With the only real downside the large number of penalties, and the strange choice not to review the last supposed fumble!

But the Cards gave a much more than credible performance. Now.... Six months of hibernation until the Vikes march out again to errrr, conquer?

Re: Football (american football to those across the pond!)

What I found so incredible about the game was that BBC 1 showed it!!!! Normally it's on 'pay extortionately' sky, or some such. As a non-partisan watcher, I thought it was a great game, and since I always want the underdog to win, was a just a smidgeon disappointed...... but only a tiny amount.

Re: Football (american football to those across the pond!)

The underdogs won last year, so it's only fair that the underdogs didn't quite make it this time.

And as I was hoping for a Steelers win, I had to endure plenty of anxiety on the way to their win.

And some people in Arizona got to see a different type of fumbling (which involved, it seems a "malfunction" only slightly related to clothing):

Re: Football (american football to those across the pond!)

A good game, and closer than I thought it would be. I was almost going to cut out and go to work at the three quarter mark, figuring the Steelers would grind it out, but not so much! Glad I stayed home...

Alright, now it's just a few short months to the draft!
