Publishers Who Take Unsolicited Manuscripts

DAW
Tor
Baen

What are some others? I've submitted to each of these (haven't yet heard back from Baen, should be contacted sometime in the next couple of months).

BTW, they don't have to just be sci-fi/fantasy, because I'm also working on some normal fiction. Well, it's post-apocalyptic.

Just as a heads up, despite what it says on their websites, Random House, Orbit, and Bloomsbury do not.

I would recommend getting the Writer's and Artist's Yearbook 2009. It has a list of all agents and publishers and what genres they accept and there is usually a some contact info with them.

You could also try the search engines like google etc.

Both Ralan

Ralan's Webstravaganza - Ralan.com

and Absolute Write list large and small publishers that take submissions, also Absolute lists agents as well.

Absolute Write Water Cooler - Powered by vBulletin

If you can't afford a copy of the latest Artists' and Writers' year book, then you should be able to get a copy from your library.

No short cuts, sorry, just hard work.

As for Baen, you are looking at more like 18 months reply time, than the 12 months they quote. Least it took them that long to reply to me, got good "readers' feedback" as well.

Thanks guys (and girl). I'll definitely get a copy of the yearbook the next time I'm at a bookstore. I sent a query to a literary agency in Seattle which is very near to me, so I should be hearing back from them in a few weeks.

If you look at the Tor Submissions page they state that they do not accept unsolicited manuscripts. They will take the first fifty pages, a synopsis and a query.

DAW does take unsolicited MSS.

As for Baen...I've never heard of them...where can I find info on them?

Thanks

Karen

Baen is one of the major publishers of SF and Fantasy in the US. I'd be surprised if you couldn't find some of their books in Canadian bookstores (always a good idea before you submit to any publisher to look up some of their books). For more information, you can check their website:

Jim Baen sure does like the military stuff though, but there are some other things in their inventory

This has always been the backbone of Baen Books (to the best of my knowledge). However, under the tutelage of Toni Weiskopf, it sounds like Baen is expanding their imprint to a broader audience. Time will tell.

They are doing those post-NESFA Cordwainer Smith books. I have not looked at them, but they certainly appear to be the Instrumentality of Mankind stories.

I suspect you're right. Evey publisher who runs a company/imprint puts their own stamp on it, and since Jim Baen's death Toni has been doing a great job.
