Re: Midnight Tides

So far, so good. Although I have found myself studying his style of writing as I am reading which is a little off putting!

Re: Midnight Tides

Finished Midnight Tides last night at about 6am, had to be up for work in the morning but I just couldn't put it down, no matter how late it got. I felt that, like others in the series, the first third/half of the book crawled along somewhat, the set-up being a tad laborious, but on the other hand you get to see the threads converging from an early point and, more significantly, develop the traditional ambiguity through which by the end of the book you (or I at least) have no idea who to root for. Even Rhulad was a sympathetic character by the end, and of course Trull is an old favorite, so initially I favoured the Tiste Edur, but within a few pages of meeting Bugg and Tehol I was in love with both (platonically, of course), and began to side with the Letherii. In many ways they made the book, to the extent that towards the end there was a point at which I thought 'Gerun Eberict, if you lay a finger on Tehol I'll...' and then realised I was threatening a fictional character. Suffice to say Erikson's done it again, and this despite a great deal of apprehension on my part because none of the traditional cast was involved.

I hate to be sycophantic, but it's always hard to find flaws in the Malazan books. I guess Seren Pedac was pretty bland, but then she hung out with Iron Bars, who was awesome.

Trouble is, what can I read now that'll live up to it?
