Looking For a Horror Book

This one will be difficult...

I read this book in the late 70s or early 80s. The cover depicted a ruined wall, seemed to be part of a church. On the wall is a fount - maybe for holy water or something. Instead it is full of blood. Above the fount is a sculpture of a gargoyle. The cover had a lot of dark blue and the page edges were red. I seem to recall that the story was set in the UK. I'm not positive, but I think the main characters were American. In the story a child disappears. Can't remember if the culprit is a demon or an ancient deity.

Any ideas?

Probably 'Necromancer' by Robert Holdstock: - Amazon.co.uk: Necromancer: Robert Holdstock: Books

You've remembered most of the plot, Wiz. It's the child's soul that is missing (though I think he goes missing in body later in the book) and there is an American character (There is also a French clairvoyant who works with him) - the culprit, iirc, is a Celtic deity.

Holstsock wrote a semi sequel 'The Fetch'.
