The "Fungus Isle" novelet appears in the October 1940 "Famous Fantastic Mysteries" issue directly after "The Face in the Abyss". I've had this issue for 40 or 50 years and have never been tempted to read the fungus story. The blurb at the beginning says: "It was a place where creeping, menacing destruction silently closed in; unawares (sic) men became something less than human." The story was originally published in 1923.

The premise seems to be that some shipwrecked sailors turn into walking mushrooms after eating a fungus on the island on which they are stranded.

Re: A. Merritt

Haven't read this one, but if that's the case, it's awfully close to "The Voice in the Night" by William Hope Hodgson -- certainly one of the most powerful weird tales I've ever encountered, and among Hodgson's best.

Re: A. Merritt

I've just picked up "Dwellers in the Mirrage". Was the only A. Meritt I saw on the shelf so that's why I picked it. Hopefully it will be a good introduction to his work.
