Book I can't remeber the Title or author

Hi,

wonering if anyone can helpe. I read a book when i was much younger and for some reason have recently remembered some of it and would like to get hold of it. I have no clue as to the title or author other than a couple ofremebered snippets.

The book was about a young boy who grows into learning about being able to do magic. I remember he had a belt with iron sigils on it and ended up being branded on the arm when one of the sigils became hot due to magic or some form of attack. The brand was of a cross, not a crucifix i am sure, more a celtic or ancient cross. Not much to go on but any help would be great, may be able to piece togehter more to find it by any cluues provided. I also rememeber him setting fire to a log using his power for the first time it hink it was, mostly by accident on his part.

The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper. Excellent book, film version was recently released and is supposed to be not that great.

A very good series; "The Grey King" is nearly my favorite book, ever. You are too right about the movie though .
