Also not necessarily "apocalyptic" as such, but nontheless a variation on the theme; dystopian - Do Andriods Dream of Electric Sheep? by Phillip K. Dick. Dark and depressing is indeed the definition of this particular piece.

Cheers, DeepThought
A great amount of PKD fits that bill, a lot of dystopian worlds, and anything by him is worth reading of course. He does have a couple of genuinely post-apocalyptic works though - Second Variety (a short story) and Deus Irae (a collaboration with Roger Zelanzy), Dr. Bloodmoney, The Penultimate Truth (sort of...), The World Jones Made.

Also:
The Kraken Wakes, The Chrysalids - John Wyndham (as well as Day Of The Triffids)
Where Late The Sweet Birds Sang - Kate Wilhelm
The Sheep Look Up - John Brunner (again more dystopian, do these count?)
Earth Abides - George R. Stewart
The Long Voyage Back - Luke Rhinehart
The Black Corridor - Michael Moorcock
They Thirst - Rob McCammon
Plague Year - Jeff Carlson
The Death of Grass - John Christopher
Cloud Atlas - David Mitchell

A few to be going on with! I have to endorse the recommendation of The Road as well, incredibly powerful stuff.

Damnation Alley by Roger Zelazny springs to mind.
