Ember

The City of Ember by Jeanne Duprau

Hey, this book was pretty good. Culwch posted the trailer for a movie adaptation in Movie Trailers .

It's about a postapocalyptic city whose 241 year old generator is failing. If the generator fails, the entire city will die as they will have no electric light and haven't discovered candles or another way to keep fire alight longterm. Their supplies are beginning to run out just as Lina finds a partially sister-masticated set of instructions that may lead everyone in the city to safety. She and her best friend Doon try to decipher the message and stay out of the way of some shady town officials that wish to quiet them before the whole city finds out what is really happening.

It was very exciting, and I read the book in one sitting. I really couldn't bring myself to put it down and int he end stayed up way past my bedtime. I definitely recommend it to anyone over the age of nine or so who wants a quick, but very good read the whole family can share.
