Who are your favourite characters?

i think Tomas/Ashen-Shugar is hands-down the coolest character. The most inspirational for me would be Jimmy, who rises from nothing, and Macros, whose heroic effort against the demon-king got me right into it, moreso than when i read the passage where frodo destroys the ring in LOTR. James death dissapointed me as i wanted to see him go down fighting, and i always pictured he would. Then again Arutha's deathwas worse; the great hero of the riftwar falling over on a ship and breaking his hip, old age or not, it still seemed pointless. Nakor provided comic relief and i thank Feist for him and Sho Pi, along with Kulgan and Tully, whose arguements were some of the funniest things i've seen on paper.

Afraid I don't agree with you on the points about Arutha and Jimmy. Not all heroes die an honourable death and Arutha's death wasn't pointless at all. If Arutha hadn't of died, then the Serpentwar Saga would have been based all around him, rather than having better books showing how the different characters stuck together will little experience of war and got through. Having Arutha would have been great, he's my favourite character, but it wouldn't have been the same.

As for Jimmy, he was never a fighter really. He died saving the thing he loved, Krondor, and with the person he loved, Gamina. That is hero material day in, day out

I have to agree wuith Vencar on this one also. The fact that Ray writes over an extended timeline, wherein people grow old and die makes his books far more believable for me than some other authors' contruibutions to the genre.

Tho I wept at Jimmy's passing, he was an old man who had lived a long and wonderful life and, as Ven says, died fighting to save the city he loved. The very fact that Arutha's death was so mundane made him even more believable as a character too.

I can never decide when asked this question and i usually end up dumping a list consisting of the same characters alot of ppl here have. This is not in order of most liked or anything, i split them into categories cause i think its impossible to compare some characters to others

In the normal ppl who came to great station category...
Arutha - noble, self sacraficing, great leader of men with the quick wit to match
Jimmy the hand - cunning and to a degree ruthless, who thanks to a great man focused that on a noble cause.
Erik von darkmoor - simple and moral man, forced into terrible circumstances and yet bettering himself for it (i.e. his devotion for his men and a cause/once again a great leader of men)

In the ppl who came to great power category...
Pug - power, wisdom, but with the same qualities he had as a boy that made him such an incredible character. love, modesty, even self doubt at times, but when it comes to it not afraid to use his power. Also hes not above these feelings that we all have, rage, despair etc. as for those who havnt got pug atleast somewhere in their top list, i dont quote know how you cant and still like feists books... he is the protagonist of more than half his works and simply a beautifully developed character

Tomas - same as pug really, not surprising as they have come through basically the same trials and the same tolls weigh on their shoulders. i just wish they would team up again, but i spose pug is really out of his power league now but i still hold hope as tomas's memories give him a kind of wisdom that pug could only hope for.

Secondary characters of power...
Macros - funny at times, an arogant ass at others, powerfull at yet other times. well rounded
Miranda - in alot of ways pugs opposite, its what makes them so good together
Nakor - very high on the list (if there was one) of pure enjoyement. funny, mysterious, the ultimate quirk, i shall miss him greatly


there are so many others that i would like to devote as much time to but this overlong post would end up a novel in of itself. So just suffice it to say that the only character in the history of the great REFs career that i have felt physical or mental revulsion at what i was reading was Roo Avery in Rise of a merchant prince. I simply found no redeeming qualities in him and i couldnt even use that as an excuse to like him (i mean that in the way that leso varen is interesting to read) and at times i would look how far ahead it was to eriks chapters and simply sigh to myself. But he came good in the end of broken crown so i manage to get along.

to adress the "super hero" complex or whatever it was about pug being too powerfull... are you NUTS??? i point you in the direction of the many enemies pug has only just escaped, and most times it wasnt even his power that saved him. eg. leso varen, the demon king. and now as the darkwar is finished pug enters the realm of the gods themselves. remember this cardinal rule of story telling AND life, there is ALWAYS someone more powerfull than you.

I have to say that Jimmy's death was heroic. Though it wasn't sword to sword, he could have escaped the explosion if he so chose, but he didn't. It was a sorrowful time. Sigh. Anyway, my favourite main character would have to be Tomas and his Valheru counterpart. Not for the actual character of Tomas himself, because let's face it; he has very little to offer. His input is always the same, he rarely contributes more than a blade. But the idea behind the character is fantastic.

For personality and character depth I would have to say Erik Von Darkmoor. The Serpentwar Saga was fantastic and his journey really gripped me.

Let's face it, every character in Feists novels become inaccessible to a point when they get past a certain stage in their life. Except Pug, of course, but then he's immortal and ever changing as a rule. The ones without the long-life are the ones that grip me most. Maybe it's a mortal thing

I've now taken a liking to good old Ghuda. He's modest, humble and saves Nicholas more than once, not to mention Anthony

My Favorite Characters

Erik von Darkmoor - his sheer skill with the blade, and tactics is amazing. Also, I can picture him exactly in my head. I like his Barbarian-like attributes.

Nakor the Isalani - I love this his mysterious, and confusing outlook on life. I know that he is really important soon (I'm only up to the Serpent Wars). Have to love that bag he carries around.

Pug/Milamber - just because he is who he is. His power is insane.

Tomas/Ashen-Shugar - same as Pug. His half elf/Valheru is awesome.

Macros the Black - the best magician in Midkemia, or maybe the world? Enough said.

Ghuda - I loved this ragged mercenary just because of his fighting skills, and his "who cares?" sort of attitude.

I don't want to literally list all the characters of the book, so I'm going to stop here. Hehe. There is probably some more that I love, but this is good enough.
