The Illustrated Man (Ray Bradbury)

I recently re-read ray Bradbury's Illustrated Man. It's something I do every so often and this might help explain the ever-growing to-be-read pile.

Anyway I was wondering what the book would be like illustrated. As a graphic novel.

What do you think? One artist for the whole book or an artist for each story? Would you want it clear that the stories take place in pictures on a man's skin or would you like them to come out, as it were and standalone in the panels? Would the panels be many on a page or be large ones that blended into each other?

And who would the artist/s be?

Re: The Illustrated Man (Ray Bradbury)

I was really a little too old to appreceate Graphic Novels before they developed into what they are today but.....
The novel was made into a movie in the late sixties. The format they used to was to zoom in toward the tatoo and then tell the story. I think this would work with a graphic novel as well as it did with the film. The stories are wonderful and worth reading in any format.

Nesa, the people who did the graphic novel for Best Of Ray Bradbury could get a guernsey? I've not seen it myself, do you have a copy?

Re: The Illustrated Man (Ray Bradbury)

Yes GOLLUM I have the Best of Ray Bradbury. That was several stories with a different artist for each. It included the Fog Horn. Was pretty well done.

Steve ... it's one of his books that I love the best. And I agree the movie concept would work. Perhaps in a larger format than the usual graphic novel.

I've always wondered why it has never been turned into a graphic novel. Do you think it's possible that Bradbury may have had an objection? This is something JD mentioned as well.

Re: The Illustrated Man (Ray Bradbury)

I recently bought my son the graphic novel of I Am Legend. I'm not sure who did that one but it was word for word the same as the book and the pictures were great. (Will check to see who it was)

I would love very much for the Illustrated Man to be made into one. I have the book at home and have been meaning to reread it for well over two years now. I've forgotten a lot of the book... stories the tattoos tell.

To clarify: I mentioned it as a possibility, though I think it an unlikely one. But to be honest, I don't really know anything that has kept it from being done.

Re: The Illustrated Man (Ray Bradbury)

Wasn't the point of the plot that he never got to see the tattoo on his back. Wouldn't it spoil it to have it there in front of him on the next panel.
Or am I thinking of Dorian Grey.

Re: The Illustrated Man (Ray Bradbury)

There was one patch that was all swirly and unclear. He could see it and he explains how it changes and clears up if he spends time with any one person. He says that it will show the said person's future including how they die and then he's always shunned and chased away.

I've always wondered if he'd eventually see himself since if he was always driven away he'd spend all his time alone.

Alia ... yes please. I didn't know there was a graphic novel and from your description it's a very good one.

Re: The Illustrated Man (Ray Bradbury)

I just picked up the book from the library having just finished Fahrenheit 451, which was very good and a little bit scary. I'm very excited to read The Illustrated Man now.
