Re: Least Favorite Characters

'filler' suggests she does nothing at all, and has no storyline of her own let alone the novel's plots, but she does, she has been on such a journey and I think we've learnt a lot through her chapters, both about her and the people of Westeros.

Ill have to weigh in on the side of respectfully disagreeing. Without Arya we would have very little idea of what was going on in Westeros, at least first hand. Through her eyes we have seen, Gregor Clegane, Sandor Clegane, the death of Yoren, the brutality of the Lannister Bannermen, Rorge, Biter, Gendry, Beric Dondarrion & the brotherhood, Jaqen and Syrio, Harrenhall, Roose Bolton, the Brave Companions....well...etcetera.

Plus given the fact that she appears on her way to becomming one of the faceless, I daresay she IS one of the main plot lines.

The main plotline is all well and good, Im interested in travelling down the road that leads to the conclusion too, but sometimes you find interesting things along the way...off to the side of the road...that you just have to investigate. Moments like Roose's leeches for example, lend nothing to the plot, but really fill the story out and give it more color.

This is all, of course, IMHO.

Actually, I do , like Jon Snow. I just said that because I was hoping someone would take the bait. However, I must say I like all the characters except Stannis, who I have already ranted about numerous times, but, I must admit he is interesting, he is simply the only one I can't relate to.

Cause of her (in part) Sansa lost her wolf (which Sansa probably didn't deserve in the first place).
Only Jon did anything to 'deserve' his wolf, when he was prepared to do without one for the sake of his siblings. And Sansa didn't have hers for long anyway.

But if we're only giving wolves to people who 'deserve them', the series would feature very few wolves.

Because of her we've gotten an intimite perspective of the peasant class, the group suffering the most in the war. We haven't gotten this POV from anyone else (that I recall)
I suggest you reread the Brienne chapters in AFFC, then: they do exactly the same thing.

Re: Least Favorite Characters

Well one time I got really really drunk and spent the night trying to figure out how to swing from tree to tree like tarzan except I was only wearing a shirt tied around my waist as a loincloth....

Did I mention this was a public park?

So if anything deserves a wolf, Im thinking Ive got to be pretty high up in line

That's exactly what I mean, Aegon. Thanks for clarifying that for me.

Re: Least Favorite Characters

My Least Favorite Characters
  1. Vargo Hoat
  2. Ser Gregor Clegane, The Mountain that Rides – utterly despicable since he was a child with seemingly no motive whatsoever. There is nothing bad that can happen to him that he doesn’t deserve.
  3. King Joffrey “Baratheon” – an annoying, cruel, punk/brat/wimp who was on the road to possibly becoming the worst king Westeros has ever seen.
  4. Euron Greyjoy
  5. Prince Viscerys Targaryen – He and Joffrey were close in my estimation. I started to let his annoying catch phrase be the tie breaker, but Joff was such a bigger part of the story.
  6. Ser Allister Thorne – an annoying, childish jerk with seemingly no motive like The Mountain, but at least The Mountain’s fighting and role in the story are significant. I wouldn’t complain if Thorne simply disappeared without an explanation.
  7. Queen Cercei Lannister
  8. Lady Lysa Aryn
  9. Lord Tywin Lannister
  10. The Freys, Janos Slynt, Lady Catelyn Stark – a lot like Cercei, only a lot smarter and not a whore. I would have liked her if it weren’t for how she treated Jon. She’s even more annoying as a zombie. Lord Robert Arryn – I cut him some slack for being a weak, lonely, sickly kid with a stupid, paranoid, crazy mother and no father, but he is still super annoying. Lord Randyl Tarley – about as big of a pig’s rump as you can be without being a villain.

Re: Least Favorite Characters

Even after only reading the first, I must admit I don't have any characters which strike me the wrong way. Even the characters that are antagonists at least have enough depth to make them seem justified to me.

I'm just sort of enjoying it all.

I think i'm going to start collecting knights. I need to buy a curio cabinet to display them in. This book has got me all stoked on knights and feudal times.

Re: Least Favorite Characters

Walder Frey reduces me to quivers along the lines of little Robert Arryn. Antagonists are very nearly more necessary than protagonists but George hit the nail on the head with old Frey. If I had but one wish it would be to walk nonchalant into the Twins and slit that wrinkly old throat.
