Second, laughing at gay people is making fun of their sexuality. Making fun of someone's sexuality is offensive.

It isn't less offensive because you didn't 'go crude'. If anything, it's more so, because you seem to think that homosexuality is funny per se.

And it's that attitude that's immature. It's like saying 'boobs!' and snickering. Most people grow out of that at about age nine.

Third, the adult reaction to someone telling you they have found something you said offensive is to apologise and then shut up. Justifying yourself or accusing people of being oversensitive is eesentially telling them that you regard it as their problem, not yours: adding insult to injury. Plus, it's about as mature as saying 'oh yeah? well, takes one to know one!'

Now, you may say 'why can't I be immature?' and you would be right. You can be as immature as you like. But don't be surprised if people call you on it, or don't pay any attention to you as a result.
1) that is subjective and it is not because you don't have to laugh at loud that it isn't a joke.

2) that is such a generalisation, so we cannot laugh with gay people, well then gay people cannot laugh with straight people, coloured people cannot laugh with kaukasian people and vice versa, hell let us all stop laughing and be done with it. It is not because it is sensitive that you cannot say something or make fun of something, it is natural that we do so, and it is so with everything.

Ah yes the logic, it is easy to twist things isn't it, i did never say that homosexuality was funny per se, unlike you i however believe one can make fun of it and why not, they make fun of us, we all make fun of each other, wether it is because of this thing or that, there will always be some charasteristic wich people will use for jokes. Wether it is someone's sexuality, colour of hair, shape of hair, .... it is all used, sexuality is just one more aspect one can make jokes about , that per se does not mean you are offensive. there are tons of jokes about fat people, skinny people and you are bassicaly saying that all of them are offensive to either anorexic or obese persons. There is a difference between innocent jokes like the ones i written and offensive discriminating ones, i have never not ones discriminated gay people or any other people for that matter. The way you act you people would be offended by everything all the time.

and if you not see the differnce between saying boobs and sniggering (something wich i neve did anyways but perhaps you did) and what i wrote well, then perhaps you need to look in the mirror and rethink about some things.

3) i have never said i minded that people call me upon it, but it is not immature for me to respond when clearly what i have written is not offensive in general, if he for some various reason finds it offensive he can say that, but then he should not expect me to share his viewpoint nor apologize for it.
All things in life or subjective and when i say something that regards him personally and offends him i aplogize, when i am speaking in general terms i do not have too, nor would it be mature to do so for then i would just be given up on my viewpoints for his, again you seem to be suffering of a case of generalisation.

And when did i say that i would mind it if he did not pay me any attention, if he wants to do so it his his decision, it does not matter to me, even so it seems to me you two yourselves seem to be having some issues concerning the matter, that is in fact truly not my problem and no concern of mine, you seem to be looking to hard behind things while i was just making an innocent remark as response to genosis but hey who cares about my opininion right ;-)

Okay I'm going to be a whistle-blower and ask that we all return to the topic at hand. There's no point in exchanging insults with strangers on the internet.

Re: Least Favorite Characters

Wow. I was wondering how this thread could have such legs. I kept seeing it in the New Posts list, and I just thought, 'Boy, people really have issues with those characters in George's books. They've been talking about it for weeks.'

Now, of course, I see it's just a flame war. And here's me labouring under the assumption that The Chronic Network is above that kind of thing. Live and learn.

Re: Least Favorite Characters

it is not a flame war, it is a clashing of opinions, it is not as though we are catcalling eachother.

Whas wrong with Snow? Personally he is my favourite charachter, his inner turmoil and his actions are one of the best things in the book

Re: Least Favorite Characters

This has rather deviated sharply from the orignal point of the thread. Mayhaps we could return to it or move that aspect of the conversation elsewhere? Please?

I hate all the Starks, including Jon Snow. Gregor Clegane and Ilyn Payne are my favorites along with Theon Greyjoy. I hope there's more head dashing and body switching ahead.....Damn dirty wargs

(that should be fuel enough to get us back on track)

Sorry Kiwi, I really dont know you and should never have posted this which of course snowballed out of control & into something else.

It was meant as friendly banter. Sorry ladies & gents. Im old enough to know better.

So please forgive my silliness. I also apoligize to everyone else that got caught up in this as this all would not come about if not for my original post.

Thank you.

Hey PT, except for the last couple of pages, this has actually been a good thread. I have spewed hatred at characters I didn't like, and a few rebuttles people have posted have actually made me hate those characters a little less. That's pretty cool. I wouldn't judge it negatively based on 2 out of 13. It's lasted longer than the Most Favorite thread.

Which proves that it's easier to say why you dislike things rather than like them.

Glad to see the thread returning to the topic at hand, though.
On a personal note, I don't dislike any of the characters. Even the most despicable of characters have usually had reasons for their actions (however misguided & disproportionate I may feel those to have been) and these have really fleshed out the character for me and added depth to them. I may still not "like" them personally, but I like the character just fine.
I tend to dislike characters if they are caricatures or merely act as a plot device to move the story along i.e. they act "out of character" at certain points because you feel the author has painted himself into a corner, so an unrealistic twist occurs which seems completely out of place.

Arya.

After 4 volumes of 1000+ words, she hasn't done anything that connects, or suggests a connection, with the main plot lines. Which leaves her reading as filler - as if that were necessary.

Re: Least Favorite Characters

Finally, back to the subject of the thread. I have moved on, although a little crispier than I expected.

Agree completely with Winters Sorrow, that there really is no character I dislike in that it is a badly written character or useless one. Even an a*% like Stannis or someone as unimportant as Lemon Lem are interesting to read. And yes, I am a fan of Brienne.

I am gaining more and more respect for Jon Snow as the books evolve. The preview chapters show that his POV will be very interesting with the internal struggle brought about by his experiences with the Wildlings and the presence of Stannis and Melissandre. Potentially throw Dany in the mix and the potential of being a lost Targaryen bastard and he really gets interesting. Should Jaime take over Tommen's tutoring, there can be effects on the Night's Watch.

Now, because I'm lazy and cannot bother to go looking for the Most Favourite Character thread, I ask, to keep this going and I have little imagination right now but to try to combine the two threads:
1)What character would you definitely go drinking with?
and
2)Which one would you say you had a headache and not hang out with?

I answer Tyrion for the first (...rotting sea cow...hillarious!) and Lord Frey for the second.

I believe Arya was responsible for getting the information about Dany to Sam and Aemon. She also helped take out several of Lorch's band and the Brave Companions, inadvertantly helping out Brienne later on when she bumped into several of them.

Not much, admittedly, but more is to come. I can see her completing her training with the Faceless Men, the Faceless Men coming clean that it was them who caused the Doom of Valyria and swore to destroy all Valyrians or descendents of Valyria, and could she now go and kill the new Valyrian-descended queen trying to retake control of the neighbouring continent?

Uhm, i dont mind it at all, i trash my own country every so often myself, its two other ppl who seem to be resentful that i made a joke about your Canadian mounted police, then saying it was offensive to gay people.
You can friendly banter whole days at the time, i'd have a laugh if the trashing is good.

TK says he moved on as well.

I'd like to see more about theon, so far his actions where amusing to say the least. I like the fact that he is supposed to be an amazing shot with the bow, wich is the main reason i like Anguy as well. I shoot a little bow a few times myself and it just really cool when your good at it

I really don't see Arya's chapters as filler. She's a witness.

Re: Least Favorite Characters

I have to disagree with you I, B. I think her involvement has indirectly impacted the others and the plot lines in a major way.

Cause of her (in part) Sansa lost her wolf (which Sansa probably didn't deserve in the first place).
Cause of her the Mummers turned, which lead to Jamie losing his hand.
Cause of her there is now some evidence (to the reader) of Jon's mother.
Cause of her Sam got some help in a foreign country and was able to get to Old City, and meet the mysterious pig-boy character, etc....
There are other examples.

Because of her we've gotten an intimite perspective of the peasant class, the group suffering the most in the war. We haven't gotten this POV from anyone else (that I recall) and I feel it's added some of the most powerful (though dark) coloring to the whole book.

I think she's had more impact than her sister (sorry to all you S-lovers) or Brienne or many others.
