SF Short 3 Children emerge from underground city?

Hi all,

trying to locate a Short Story I read 20 years ago. It was published in one of those compilation books that High Schools use for Literature 101.

The gist of the story is a group of teens living in an underground society decide to sneak out of the city and visit the planets surface. They eventually find themselves gathered at the hatch that opens into the world and debate all of the wonders they will see.

The ironic ending is the children emerge into a world that has been filled with trash. The Earth's surface has been turned into one big landfill. A very prophetic ending and one that our world would do well to heed.

I am looking for that same book. Although I only remember there being two kids. I think I read it in school also.
