Also, who is the Hound speaking to? There is someone else there, isn't there?
The delightful Joffrey

This was in the first Tyrion chapter of AGOT. I think this was where Sandor was introduced.

Re: Who said that?

I dont actually like this quote. I dont know why Sandor showed some humour and why he was so eager to please Jof. The Hound shows little interest in anybody else (except Sansa) and doesnt show ANY humour with Arya.

Hmmmmmm.......it's funny you say that because if you listen to how Davos was introduced it was the same way. Davos sounded like a jolly ole fool at first (when maester cressent met him on the stairs, in the prologue of ACOK) and then quickly turned into a serious no humor character.

Are we on to something, or just a random coincidence???

I think it's just character evoulution. Remember back to when we first see Tyrion. He spots Jon walking with Ghost and jumps down from where he had been sitting, doing a very acrobatic leap in the process.
Quote:

Tyrion Lannister was sitting on the ledge above the door to the Great Hall, looking for all the world like a gargoyle. The dwarf grinned down at him. “Is that animal a wolf?”
“A direwolf,” Jon said. “His name is Ghost.” He stared up at the little man, his disappointment suddenly forgotten. “What are you doing up there? Why aren’t you at the feast?”
“Too hot, too noisy, and I’d drunk too much wine,” the dwarf told him. “I learned long ago that it is considered rude to vomit on your brother. Might I have a closer look at your wolf?”
Jon hesitated, then nodded slowly. “Can you climb down, or shall I bring a ladder?”
“Oh, bleed that,” the little man said. He pushed himself off the ledge into empty air. Jon gasped, then watched with awe as Tyrion Lannister spun around in a tight ball, landed lightly on his hands, then vaulted backward onto his legs.

He then spends the restg of the books hobbling around on very gimpy legs. I thin k that jump was how GRRM might have first envisioned Tyrion, but the character quickly evolved into the half-crippled dwarf we know today.

Sandor's quote to me wasn't as much humor as it was ongoing mockery and cruelty, something The Hound was very good at from day 1. It was noted in that passage that Sandor forced Tyrion to play that little game every chance he got.

As for Davos, I don't remember how Roy played Davos when he first read him. I do remember a few characters changing over time as he developed his reading of them. Is that what you mean? In reading Davos in the prologuejust now I didn't get any "jolly" sense of him. His portrayal of Hodor was completely consistent though

That's exactly it, i just read the prologue, and listened to it. Roy made him sound jolly. Reading it on paper there wasnt the silly giggles that Roy threw in.

I'll chalk that one up to my earlier thread about the difference between "audio and the actual book".

Very good.

If you were to copy and paste that exact quote into Google, The first result is the answer.

Thanks! There's countless other resources besides Google, one would really only need to have all of the books on PDF and perform a simple search. I just happen to like that particular scene and knew where to look.

Here's an easy one....

Re: Who said that?

I'd be tempted to guess Yoren or Jon Snow but I do believe it's Tyrion Lannister. I think the original quote comes from Tywin but in the books Tyrion thinks about his fathers words so I guess his is the name I'm guessing.

So Tyrion!

Your thoughts were correct, but not your answer. This was one of Tywin Lannisters sayings as you mentioned, within Tyrions chapter.

I would call Tywin the best known strategist in the Westeros we know. Little Finger would obviously get the award for best unknown strategist in Westeros.

If no one objects, I would say you're up.

Re: Who said that?

I was all set to guess Jon, for similar reasons. Men from the North think pretty highly of themselves as well
