Nice, that's one serious lens. Worth the money I'd say, even if it did make you poor.

Re: Shout your happy news to the world!!!

My son just won the school spelling bee! Now he's going to be insufferable, of course, because he refused to study and said he wins things anyway.

Perhaps he's a secret studier. Or just quick on the uptake. But it'll be hard for you to argue with success. But well done to him however he achieved his feat.

You could always test him with English spelling. (If you do, let us know how he gets on. )

I was afraid that was going to be his downfall, actually -- in the one session of word-going-over that he allowed me, he spelled, in the English way I presume, "labourious". Luckily, that word hit a few kids ahead of his turn in the bee today, so I didn't have to worry whether he remembered it.

He used to have a photographic memory -- I'm not sure how much of it remains, but I made him read through all the words just in case. After that, he got stubborn and ...err... roostery.

Re: Shout your happy news to the world!!!

We do spell labor, labour, but I thought we spell laborious as laborious.

Having said that, Wiktionary states that we once spelt (spelled) it labourious. My Concise OED only gives laborious; my compact** OED gives laborious, but suggests that it was also laboryous or laboryouse (if I'm reading it correctly).

** - This is the complete OED from the 1930s (with supplements to bring it up to the 1980s), reduced in text size to give four pages to a page. There are three volumes: A-O; P-Z plus early supplement; later supplement. (A magnifying glass was also included in the package.)

Re: Shout your happy news to the world!!!

Ahh, well, then, he's not only English, he's outdated as well! Though not as much as he could be, apparently.

Reminds me of the joke, someone asks the little girl, "how do you spell ...(whatever it was)" and she spells out something, is told it's incorrect, and she says, "well, you asked me how I spell it!"

Re: Shout your happy news to the world!!!

does that make the prerequisite to creative writing a creative spelling class?

congratulations to your son.

Re: Shout your happy news to the world!!!

Congratulations to you, DZ, on having a son who doesn't think first in txt-spk; hope he encounters no hic-coughs in his progress - and ignores the spell-checker

Your joke reminded me of one of my dad's:

Teacher: Spell "weather".
Pupil: W H E A T H U R E
Teacher: That's the worst spell of "weather" we've had in a long time.

Re: Shout your happy news to the world!!!

Am about to leave for a 2 night break up north - dropping the kids off with their grandparents this afternoon and going off to a lovely hotel for the night . .

Can't wait - love the kids, but those breaks from them are . . . . . wonderful!!!

That's brilliant. Laughed so much.

Have fun, and remember to relax and clear the mind.

EDIT: Hey springs, didn't see your shouting happy news for 1000 posts, or sneaking into the 1000 post club thread. Slacker!

Re: Shout your happy news to the world!!!

Hee don't you worry I'll get there, just waiting for a bit of a female invasion!
My happy news - absoluttely to be shared - as some of you know I'm a mad keen allotmenteer and today the seeds were dug out to be sorted and I'm looking at my red cabbage seeds with intent (they're pretty tough)
So that means spring is getting very very close. Yay!

Re: Shout your happy news to the world!!!

It's warming up here, too, after two weeks of going down to minus double figures each night; snow's melting into slushy grey stuff, and clogged drains aren't letting it out.

Not quite time for cabbage seeds, methinks.

Re: Shout your happy news to the world!!!

I've never had a blog before, in my 23 years of writing, but particularly, the last seven years. I started one today called Guerrilla Warfare For Writers, and I'm quite thrilled about it, even though I don't expect much traffic and visitors.
