Re: Shout your happy news to the world!!!

Well another 500ish words and I should have my 15-20 minute speech written. Once that is done, all I can do is wait for my book to come back from the printer...

Why do you need to write the speech, Geoff? I think that I missed something.

That makes no sense at all.

And, congrats Geoff!! Good luck on your speech!

I hate speeches! I have to do video web cast ones. They suck.

You need 8000 hours to take the test and become an electrician. They have changed the university admissions requirements; I had to enroll now or never be eligible for acceptance in the future. Unfortunately, it is impossible to work as an apprentice and go to the University of California, San Diego as an undergrad.
I am getting a waiver that allows me to take the test anyway. I can now do the impossible; I can journey out as a JW after 4-1/2 years while attending UCSD full-time as an econ major. Pretty cool, huh? Especially when you consider that I can get a $30/hr summer job with full medical and dental now.

Whatever your post means (I'm assuming you can work as an electrician and study for your degree), Congratulations Wiglaf!

Exactly. My common law wife* wanted to kill me for dropping out of the electrical training program.

Re: Shout your happy news to the world!!!

An inside wireman presumably gets to work when they've got the roof on (as opposed to an installation electrician, which I had the papers for back around the time they were discovering alternating current, and considered vulcanised rubber a good substitute for wax impregnated paper as an insulator, who gets to work up to his knees in mud on three phase circuits that are only a breaker away from having 380 volts on them)

Of course, in my present incarnation a wireman is someone who is handy with soldering iron, crimp pliers and fibre optic terminating too, and can follow a detailed wireing diagram with several thousand connections on it, and get it right first time.

I have a presentation of the compilation book of poetry and short stories that I have done this year for school. I have to talk about it and what it means, why I did it blah blah. I have 30 minutes in which to talk and so if I do a 15-20 minute speech then I can read two poems and one of the stories. It should be good.

They seem to combine the two around here. They just keep us away from the lineman work and from the complicated communication stuff. We still put in the conduit for both those guys though. I've worked in a trench in the rain, roughed in walls, lamped fixtures, and trimmed on the same job (different buildings, on different phases, throughout a year or so).
