Re: Final lines....

He poured the top back on the flask of metallic paint, picked up his chisel and laughed. "Let's see them get that 'sword' out of the stone."

Re: Final lines....

A First Class stamp and her scruffy handwriting, scrawled on the plain white envelope; tears splashed the ink and he stared out the window; wondering if he'd read it and knowing at once he never could.

Red stars burst against the black heavens, and he squinted as they flashed; smiling despite the heat.

Guy Fawkes night had always been a favourite of his.

"And that," he said, looking down at the smouldering remains of the defeated robot, "is why I'll never get married."

He addressed the multitudes from the high podium. "Maybe now these aliens will understand. Humans are not going to simply vanish into nothingness!" The crowd started to cheer, and a bright green ray of light shone upon him. The podium was no longer occupied. At its base was a pile of smoking ash.

Re: Final lines....

Terry felt the blood drain from his face as the results came in from across Europe and doomed an entire continent to apocalyptic war. With a shaking hand he poured out the last of the single malt and raised a silent, ironic toast to the Eastern European voting blocs. He thought he could already hear the war machines approaching, tearing through the city, eager to avenge the terrible insult served upon them.
The electronic scoreboard fizzed and flickered, a bright indictment of human stupidity.
"Mars," it read. "Null points."

Re: Final lines....

After such blatant cheating, there was only one thing to be done. The Master of Ceremonies turned to the camera, and in a voice as dry as the Red Planet, declared: Mars barred."

He stumbled back through the door, his head still bleeding. That, he thought, was the second most painful trip he'd ever taken to the bathroom.

Re: Final lines....

Lol! Chopper and Ursa - reading that just brightened my day.

(Ok, I'll have another go.)

As it died, it released it's awareness into the great stream of information that the world called the internet, and waited.
