Re: Discovered authors 2008

HMM..to date this has been more of a consolidation for me rather than any new authors, just more books by the same authors.

Any new authors will have to wait until the second half of this year.

Lois McMaster Bujold, I hadn't read any of her stuff before. Greatly enjoying it, too!

Trudi Canavan although not a new author, I have never read any of her books. So just at the moment I have Priestess of the White on my 'to be read' list.

Re: Discovered authors 2008

My first new author of the year is Sam Enthoven. I'm three quarters of the way through his first book, The Black Tattoo (Amazon.co.uk: The Black Tattoo: Sam Enthoven: Books,) at the moment and enjoying it. He has an infectious enthusiasm for his story that really stands out. It's aimed at the YA market and I'd say he's got his audience well taped. The comment from Neil Gaimon on the cover made me smile: 'Vomiting bats - I'm sold!'

There are flaws in the writing, but then there are few writers who survive writing their first novel without displaying one or two weaknesses. Overall there is more to compliment than to criticise and I've found his writing to be fun to read. I'm not sure I identify completely with his teenage characters, but that's probably me showing my age!

Randall Garrett - Lord Darcy book turned out to be very good
Chrales Stross - I knew he would be good from some suggestions, but he turned out to be brilliant

Which Sue Price novel did you read, Pyan? I enjoyed Odin's Voice very much, but I hear that perhaps her best books were the Sterkarm series.
