resplendent by stephen baxter ending

Hi

Can somebody clear up a few points for me about the book resplendent by stephen baxter.

At the end of the book, why did simat become a virtual.
Also what did the machines change on earth because simat asked them to.

these things have been bugging me since i finished it.
