Re: Discworld on TV

I'm a bit dubious. I wasnt too enamored with the Hogfather adaptation (wrong book IMO) as I dont get SKY I wont be seeing this for a while and after the disapointment I felt at the Hogfather I'm not going to be going out of my way to find this on DVD.

Hope you all enjoyed it though

I'm still dubious about how good this will be
my expectations aren't that high after Hogfather, so I may be pleasantly surprised.
I'll still watch it when it is on

Re: Discworld on TV

I can't say I ever pictured Twoflower as the 'typical' Chinese/Japanese tourist...I think it's because I read the copy with the awesome Josh Kirby illustrations in which Twoflower was a little fellow in bright clothing and literally had four eyes and I think that image stuck in my head while I was reading.

Plus, I never really 'see' characters when reading, anyway, except for the very, very loose details (I think I think in verbs -- tend to 'see' movement and a little of the setting instead ) so I guess I shouldn't keep harping on about characters looking like I imagine them -- as long as the actors do a good job and the films recreate the magic of Discworld, then I'll be happy.

Read/heard an interview either with Pterry or Josh Kirby where Terry catches up with Kirby and says something to the effect "Josh, like the picture, but you wear glasses, don't you?"
"Yes"
"And what did they call you at school?"

Later editions has Twoflower in spectacles, with only two eyes.

Re: Discworld on TV

I m sorry i know David jason is a good actor but am i the only who thinks hes too old to play Rincewind?
I always get the impression from the books that Rincewind is youngish, definately not as old as David jason. I imagine him with long brown straggly hair and a wispy beard. I bit like Neil in the young ones!

Re: Discworld on TV

I can't be bothered with that official website - it takes FOREVER to load.

Just watched the second part of this and it was OK> I agree that David Jason was a bit old (but note he was Executive Producer so obviously would cast himself). I see him and Twoflower as being the same age. And I thought it was OK to make the First Tourist American - I mean it's no more and no less stereotyped than making him Japanese.

I didn't like the mask for Death or the orang-utan Librarian much. But I did like the luggage.

I think the trouble is that the later books are so much stronger, with Unseen University so much more fully conceived and all the stuff we know about Ridcully and the Bursar etc (not to mention good old Windle Poons). Plus all the stuff about the three witches and the City Watch.

So returning to these first two it seems a bit thin. And the ending was pathetic - both the prolonged farewells and Terry's little epilogue. "It's all a matter of perspective" or whatever is meaningless.

So some good bits but not an out-and-out success.

Mary

Re: Discworld on TV

David Jason is WAY too old to play Rincewind - I mean , who would you then get to play Ridcully , who's far older?

Rik Mayall would have been a better choice (although 50 , he at least LOOKS younger). And I always pictured Timmy Mallett as the ideal Twoflower - he could even wear his usual clothes!

I agree that Steve Coogan would have been a great choice to have played Rincewind but thought that against the odds DJ pulled it off sufficiently to have not left me feeling all that disappointed. I so wish they would do a City Watch adaptation next but apparently it's going to be Moist

Re: Discworld on TV

I have so far only seen the first half. Much has changed but it still retains the humour and fun story of the books. You can see that the budget was quite limited, but I think that makes it even better as a parody

Re: Discworld on TV

DJ played Rincewind well, although I still picture him in my mind being played by Graham Chapman when I read the books.

the luggage was brilliant and everything seemed to be closer to the feeling of the books than the Hogfather did.
Cohen didn't work for me, much too tall to be Cohen and somehow, not quite right.

but overall, I enjoyed it and look forward to see what they do next.
(maybe they are going to get the later Rincewind books done while DJ can still do them, as he doesn't get much of an outing in most of the Witches and Watch books and they can make them any time)

Re: Discworld on TV

I think David Jason is an excellent Rincewind, and that's all I'm going to say on the matter.

Perhaps not, I would also like to add that yes, the luggage was brilliant!!!!!

I would love a city watch one as well. pity

where did you hear it would be moist?

Not the worst choice, I should imagine that would be quite an easy one to adapt to the telly

I can't recall exactly. When COM was about to be aired I didn't realise they had amalgamated COM with LF and went looking to see when it would be aired (thinking it was seperate) one of the links I clicked had that information. However, I just googled Sky one Going Postal and found several links including this one

Television - News - Sky One sets three major HD series - Digital Spy

I wonder who will be/has been cast as Moist
