Meaning of the Blue Roses

I have been learning about plants lately, and just came across something on blue roses. Wikipedia talks about how they were used smbolically in the Victorian times.

Blue rose - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia says:

"Blue roses traditionally signify mystery or attaining the impossible. They are believed to be able to grant the owner youth or grant wishes. This symbolism derives from the rose's meaning in the language of flowers common in Victorian times....

"...In Slavic mythology one may be granted wishes by bringing a blue rose to Baba Yaga. The Blue Rose was also a symbolist, impressionist influenced art movement in Tsarist Russia in the early 20th Century...

"...Also, according to a Chinese folktale, the blue rose signified hope against unattainable love. There are various versions of this story that can be found online....

"...According to the Yui-Tua peoples of some pacific island groups the appearance of a blue rose signals the end of times..."

I am giong to finish reading the article now. There are many references for the use of blue roses in literature and films - even an ASOIAF reference!

Yes, I know that this may be over-analyzing, but that's what this forum is for.

Re: Meaning of the Blue Roses

I always thought they were used as Lyanna's symbols in the books. In the world of ASOIAF they are called winter roses.

Re: Meaning of the Blue Roses

Are there even Blue Roses that grow naturally blue or genetically altered or what? I have never seen one. Might I add that Lyanna still holding blue roses when she died and the fact Rhaegar gave her the crown of beauty which was blue pretty much proves she was in to him. In my opinion.

Yeah Wierwood. Also, when Dany sees a vision, she sees a blue rose filled with sweetness growing from the Wall. That signifies, Jon. So, I guess that signifies she was his mother too.

Re: Meaning of the Blue Roses

There are no naturally blue roses in our world, but we also don't have dragons and weirwoods. The blue roses are the only things that bloom in winter, so I suppose they could be a symbol of anything lovely from the North.
